Research into Alopecia petition!

I don't know about you, but I get tired of insurance companies saying that alopecia is a cosmetic condition when in fact its an illness.  I've had alopecia for 10+ years now on and off and I've tried all of the treatments and so forth and nothing has worked for me.  When my hair did come back, it came back on it's own and then it left me again.  Also, I can't even tell you how much $$ I have spent on wigs over the 10+ year span.  My insurance company kept telling me that they will not reimburse the price for my wig because it's a cosmetic thing.  I argued and argued with them but they did not budge.  How is your hair falling out due to an autoimmune condition/illness a COSMETIC THING? For the life of me I could never comprehend it!

Hugh Gallagher created a petition exactly for this and your signatures are greatly needed! Thank you!

Pardon my ignorance, is this for anyone in any country to sign?
Please clear up my confusion. Is this for citizens of USA to sign, or is it United Kingdom?

Hi Beth -

The gentlemen who started the petition is in UK.  I figured any kind of attention/spotlight on alopecia is worth doing :) By the way, no ignorance, you asked a great question! :))

Also, if you want to make a change in the US, you can do read about the Cranial Prosthetic Medicaid Coverage Enhancement Act (H.R. 4989) on https://www.naaf.org/advocate-for-change/legislative-advocacy/legis....  You can send an email to Joe Stewart @ stewart@hmcw.org.

You can also send an email to Gary Sherwood at gary@naaf.org and request contact information for your local congressmen were you can send an email (they have a template on the website) voicing your opinion on this subject.  Hope this helped :)

Have a great weekend!

I will absolutely support this with any the action you request.
I have a request, at this time.
I am starting a call to action for male and female androgenetic alopecia.
Just raising awareness that this type of hair loss needs more research, and we are likewise tired of money misspent.
I will notify you of my hairgrowthcampaign.com, when it is up and running.
Thanks again

That is wonderful Beth!  I will absolutely support you and your cause all the way!  Just let me know when your website is ready to go and I am there! :)

The National Alopecia Areata Foundation is working hard to get a legislative bill through congress called the Cranial Prosthetic Medicaid Coverage Enhancement Act. This is for those who are without resources to buy a wig. This may not apply directly to you but it will help in the future for insurance companies to see that Cranial Prosthetics are for medical reason not for entertainment or cosmetic reasons. The Legislative group at NAAF is working hard for this to happen. I myself have gone to legislators offices in my area and shared with them that they need to cosponsor H.R.4989. Let me know if you need more information. A petition is good to take to these congress peoples office. NAAF is trying to change this, I suggest you call them and see how you can help them help those with Alopecia. Let me know if you need further information. Lisa

Would it just be for a wig ? Or the fact that if treatment if available companies won't deny us ? And say it's cosmetic ?

This Bill is for a wig for those that qualify for Medicaid. However, if this bill passes then many private insurances will follow so it will be become less difficult to get reimbursement.

Oh okay. I thought it was for the fact that they are trying to fight that Alopecia is not cosmetic ! Therefore wigs and treatment if available the should be able to us like any other immune disease get treatment from the government. So this petition that kris is for treatment and to fight that it is not cosmetic.

Thanks for the information.

Thanks so much for the information Alo-mom :)  I will definitely call them!

Please do ask if it's for the approval of wigs or the approval of a liable treatment.

Thank you.

Will do Singh :)
