Hi Everyone,

I am new to this site. I have had alopecia areata, which turned into alopecia universalis, for over a year now. My doctor has no answers and the dermatologist said that I would never find the answer to my hair loss.

However, when I first went to see my Dr a year ago my iron stores, ferritin, was 23ug/L. I have recently been doing a lot of research on this and apparently you need a ferritin level of over 70ug/L to stop hair loss and promote hair growth.

This is the only test that has come back low, everything else is fine. I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem? My Dr doesn't think this is the cause of my hair loss, but I think it could be. There has to be a reason.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Debbie.

Hi from the Netherlands.

When I started facing more serious the alopecia (AA) they run some full blood tests and the doctors discovered that everything was fine except the iron (ferritin) levels. The amount in the blood was so low that they suspected that recently I lost a lot of blood. However this was not the case, they prescribed me some iron tablets but to no positive effect. In fact what I had noticed is, when taking regularly iron pills, my nose bleeds more often - I have this problem since I was a kid. In the end I stopped entirely with the iron pills.
