I just got a new wig, and I am so protective of it! We went out for seafood at Myrtle Beach, and I was nervous the whole time that the smell of fish would permeate my wig. I actually changed seats to be further from the water and the fish smell.

We went out for ice cream and it was windy, and I was so nervous about getting ice cream in my wig. The wig is all I think about the entire time I'm wearing it. I actually think I'm more relaxed in my cheap $40 halo wig than I am in my $200 really beautiful wig.

Will I eventually get over thinking about my wig all the time? I just got it last week, and it is in perfect condition, so I'm trying to keep it that way!

Sounds normal to me. It's like anything new. But that's the beauty of having choices and different wigs( and hats and scarves and bald) for different days and activities.

I was on a Segway recently. One woman was wearing a wig and looked like she was going to die in the heat since you have to wear a helmet. I flipped my wig off and wore a large cotton scarf under my helmet and had a ton of fun.

Think variety and hold onto all your different kinds of wigs and headcovers.

It's natural to be protective - they look so nice when they're new. During the first month I was wearing my synthetic wig, I bent over an oven to take out a pizza, without remembering I couldn't do that. Even though I pulled back the instant I felt the heat, I fried the bangs. Then there was the time I couldn't sit with friends under an outdoor heater at a restaurant. After these experiences, I was nervous about it all the time. I'm definitely more relaxed in a scarf, hat, or bald.

Hi Aimee, I don't know how you will feel in the weeks to come. My experience so far with my wig (3 weeks) is, I wear it everywhere and pretend it's my real hair. I avoid open ovens and campfires but other than that, I go to work, get sheet rock and insulation on it and comb it out the next day (also squirt some conditioner!). I have washed it once and it was like brand new again! I bought mine for 250 and I bought another for 180 that I haven't worn yet because I'm too much in love with my first one! The way I figure, if my favorite one gets ruined, I will wear my back up till I order another favorite one. Besides, my hair may grow back any time now. Ya never know, right? lol!
You most definitely not alone! I was like that when I got my new expensive wig. I think it took some before I relaxed about it. After I learned more about caring for it and what it could take I became more confident and enjoyed it a lot more. I understand it is an investment and we want to keep them looking their best for as long as possible.
I was always worried about the wig, and felt like everyone could tell I was wearing fake hair. Tonight I was at an event with about 500 people, bald. Much easier, and it was a warm night, so much cooler!
As you've discovered this is no way to live. Every woman deserves a total life of total comfort in all situations. First let me say that a well fitted wig will not fly off. A little medical grade double stick tape will feel more secure on top of that. But a big scarf over it can be pretty and give security. Think minimum 30 x 30 square folded over into a rectangle.

If wearing the wig is a new thing so that it's not yet something others know about, use the pretty scarf option. Take a look at the fashion magazines. You'll see many models with a scarf tied over their hair. In today's fashion, the wider the better. this spring Ralph Lauren ran a stunning ad using his big paisley scarf over hair. Low over the forehead and tied in the middle of the head at back. Very chic, comfortable and secure. If you're into retro looks, channel Ali McGraw in the 70's which is back again.

If it's not the wig itself getting loose, but the idea that the wefts will show, the scarf over wig works for that, too. And though this smooshes a wig more, a hat over a wig is going to give a lot of security, too. It's hotter and not so good for that reason, but try to see all these options as possibilities depending on the weather.

And when the time comes to not care that other people know you have a wig...it will matter very little if the wind kicks it up a bit. It takes a gale storm wind to make any hair go at such an angle that the cap is visible. Hair has weight to it and you just don't see hair standing away from the head like that. In a wind that strong, people are rarely outside or they are anchoring their hair with hats, too. Jackie O would have tied it under her chin and though that will inevitably come back, right now the look is to tie it in the back. Another thought is that the cheapest wigs have more exposed structure so the better your wig is made the less can be detected. With a suction type, it would be undetectable.

When you wear a great looking scarf with nice earrings and sun glasses, you're actually the envy of the other women who look at you and think, Why Didn't I think of that?

Or, just ditch the wig entirely and wear a fashionable scarf or a hat over a fashionable scarf. I started a photo gallery called No Little Bandanas.

Where did you get yours from Aimee?

I spent a LOT of money (human hair) and treat mine like gold. I don't know how I will afford to replace it! I was not going to wash it often - to save having to comb out tangles (and pull hair out) and then found out that was bad. I should wash it 7-10 days to get the dust and air pollution out and add protein back in. I put a scrunchie around it like a pony tail, then put the whole thing in a lingerie bag - like what you use for delicate laundry - and swish it in the shampoo water, then rince and spray LOTS of detangler and leave in conditioner. I worry about oxidation, fading, losing hairs - they do come out - tearing the cap...everything. Now that I have developed a few more patches that just happen to be where the clips hit, I have to reposition the clips so they have something to grab onto. But it is HAIR, so I also cherish the wig!
