Hi to all. I have been losing hair for over 20 years. I have several autoimmune issues going on: thyroid disease, psoriatic arthritis, fibro, and the hairloss. Conventional drs have done nothing for me all these years but take my money and tell me I need anti depressants. All these years I lost a ton of hair but some how maintained a normal full head of hair UNTIL now. My burning scalp is driving me crazy and I have lost about 80% of my hair this time, really fast in the last 3months, it is diffused. I went to tons of derms when this all started years ago. I have 5 biopsies and was told it was TE and it would stop. It never did, but like I said, I had a normal head of hair. This time is different. My hair is almost gone. I have begun seeing a fundamental type practicioner and she believes my body is under an autoimmune attack. We are working to balance my immune system, thyroid , etc. I believe taking Humira a few months ago made my system go crazy. I have waited months to get into this derm and I am just wondering if there's any point. I feel like drs have failed me and I have lost most of my hair anyway. I am just afraid they will give me something that will cause more problems. I am just devastated. Any opinions appreciated.

There is not a Derm anywhere in the world( i live in England) that can do these two things in tandem.

Ask this Derm if they can:

1- diagnose Alopecia

2- Cure( never comes back again) Alopecia or treat Alopecia so your hair regrows fully( but you may get another episode in the future)

Of course No 1 is the easy bit. I could diagnose most forms of Alopecia and i'm not a Doctor!

But Pam.......it's all about No 2! There is no cure and there is no treatment for Alopecia ( even temporary remission).
There never has been and there is not one today and i would bet there won't be one next year and that people will be using this site next year. However there is remission. I have had full remission four times. Never cost a penny, never visited a Derm for three episodes, never changed any aspect of my life and the remission lasted for years.....until i went AU LOL.

I would visit this Derm and see what they have to say. It's all about the No 2. Forget the cure lol but ask can you regrow my hair in x months with your wondrous drugs?
If they say "yes/maybe but it will take time" lol You wil then undertake months of treatment,

Two years later some else on one of these forums will ask the same question you asked. By then your treatment will be a distant memory and someone else will be sitting in that Derms office.

Oh! I was that person four years ago lol. Good luck.
Because alopecia is so unpredictable, really there's no point in going to the derm unless you are seeking treatments that may or may not work (I'm quite sure it's coincidental). After years and years of nothing, I went to the derm about 4 or 5 years ago because I started getting fuzz. It was a complete waste of time and he had the nerve to tell me I probably know more about alopecia than he does (that's not saying much for himself either). I think most doctors these days are pill pushers, they make money when they give us prescriptions and testers. Always go with your gut instinct though, go anyways if it's taken so long to get in and you always have the option to decline any treatment or information. I'm not sick and if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!! And btw, thyroid issues are very common place with alopecians, nothing weird with that, they kind of go together?? Good luck.
