I have been treating myself without drugs/steroids quite successfully over the past six months (in fact I haven't taken drugs or steroids for almost 2 years so I hope they are all out of my system now). I had AT just over a year ago and was beginning to lose my eyebrows. I knew I had to do something. Today I have all of my eyebrows and a full head of white hair (all different lengths, but not patchy anymore).

I have made a lot of changes in 2010 and I believe that these ongoing adjustments (tweaking) I am doing is making the difference. I am happy to share what is working for me in detail with anyone who is open to healing. There is simply too much information for me to post on a discussion board, but I would be happy to email back and forth if that works for you.

Hi Chris

I'm very much interested. I've been seeing a naturapath, since february... I've tried different suppliments and I'm now on Vitamin D and quite a few others. This is pretty much my last chance at natural therapy so any ideas to me are good ideas!!. I live in Australia and find that, its all just guess work over here.

Thanks
Tracey
HI, Tracey. I think Alopecia is caused by leaky gut and yeast. I have quit eating gluten products, dairy and eggs. I found out that eggs were the last thing that was causing my head to burn. I am not losing hair anymore and my head does not burn. I am also following Ann Louise Gittleman's advice from her "Fast Track One'Day Detox Diet" as far as what to eat. Unfortunately, she named it "one-day". It is more than one day, but I am not doing the fast, I am just eating things that cleanse your liver and make your lymphatic system better. Oh, and I also quit coffee and tea, even green tea, as it has been found to have too much fluoride in it which can destroy your thyroid. You could get the book at the library or look at what she writes online.

You know what Beth, I think you may be on the right track. I have switched to a more alkaline diet, no coffee, dairy, wheat or yeast (haven't got as far as eggs yet), but I have noticed that my allergies are calming down and these are still early days for me. Also by switching to a more alkaline diet with less meat etc. the body's pH is more balanced and allows the proper uptake of calcium, iron, etc.

I think it may be possible too that food combining can cause digestive disturbances that affect our uptake of nutrients as well. I am starting to eat vegetables with protein or vegetables with carbs but not having the protein and carbs together in the same meal. Fruit should stand alone as a snack and not be consumed with/after a meal and in small quantities.

Keep us posted as to how things progress with you Beth. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, Chris. I agree with you and so does Ann Louise Gittleman who wrote the book I mentioned above. She also said that soy is bad for you and I once ate a lot of it and boy did I have stomach problems as well as my hair got really dry. Gittleman does recommend meat but usually chicken, fish and beefalo (I really hate meat, actually, but I realize I have to eat it or I feel really, really tired). I don't like red meat either. She recommends spirilina and yeast flakes (they do not cause candida). Anyway, thought you might be interested. I really wish that no one ever had to go through this. I don't think doctors study nutrition and have been surprised at what they don't know.

Have you considered taking the digestive enzymes in addition to the cleaner diet? I was reading about that with the leaky gut information. And, it said that it takes a while to heal the intestines so you won't see immediate results.
Yep - digestive enzymes, colon cleanse, probiotics - all may be necessary to clean up the digestive system, depending on the person.
please let me know how you are doing this-I am trying prednisone but have to ween off it due to blood pressure. email me at Tanya.ogalesco@gmail.com
Tanya, get the book from your library by Ann Louise Gittleman that I mentioned above. That is what I did. She really knows about nutrition as well as the environment. She lets you know why you do not want to be eating some things, like wheat. She goes way beyond Dr. Oz by far because she mentions toxins in our environment. Please read the book. I have nothing to do with Gittleman and am not trying to sell the book that is why I am telling you to get the book from the library); however, I believe "you are what you eat" and Gittleman explains things in a friendly and easy to read manner. One thing she says is that often we don't have enough digestive acids in our stomachs to break down our foods and get the vitamins we need from them. Thus, people get osteoporosis because no matter how much calcium they take, if their body can't metabolize it, then it literally goes down the toilet. Therefore, she says to take Betaine HCI Pepsin and ox bile. I buy something without ox bile because my old naturopath recommend it. Anyway, it helps your digestion. She also recommends Kal Nutritional Yeast flakes. I could go on and on. Everyone here should read her book, as it is an education as far as what is happening in our world and with our food. After all, we are the people and we have a voice; we are being poisoned by the chemicals in our environment which are making us fat and causing us to lose our hair. Yet doctors tell us otherwise. Now I know why that when I eat a sandwich at lunch once a day, I gain weight like an elephant!! It's the wheat/toxins/yeast!!

I hate to bust any bubbles but my son has AU since age 6 months and is now almost 8 years old. He suffers from severe food allergies and his diet is completely free of dairy, eggs (anaphylaxis to both), wheat, oats, barley, soy, peanuts, treenuts, shellfish, sunflower, safflower since age 1. I believe that his food allergies have something to do with enzymes missing in his body, but I am not prepared to experiment on him until he is an adult and his body has finished growing. So again, if you stop eating eggs, dairy, wheat, I don't think it'll do you much good with the Alopecia, otherwise he would have a full head of hair by now. You do need those foods to keep your skin in good shape.

One thing I have noticed is that sun exposure (natural source of Vit D) seems to help his hair grow. His hair grows very fast (in patches) over the spring/summer.

Good luck with the diet.
I've been getting out in the fresh air and getting plenty of sun (without overdoing it to where I burn.) For years I hardly ever went outside and I think the vitamin D from Sun is one of the best things for mind, body and spirit within moderation. I usually go out for like a half hour or so without sunscreen and then put plenty on if I want to stay out longer, because I am very fair.

I am also a strict vegan, so no meat, dairy or eggs (I've been so for years before the alopecia started). I tried going gluten free but missed real pasta and bread too much, and I can't give up coffee or tea either, I might never get any work done without a little caffeine boost!

Lately, I'm also focusing on what I put—and keep—in my mind at least as much, if not more so, than what I put into my body. I believe that thought has power and don't want to become too obsessed with avoiding injesting anything that I crave or adding anything to my body without paying heed to what I focus on and what's going on inside.
I know that must be hard with your son as well as you, but don't give up. I don't think it is the same for everyone, but the fact that he has so many allergies makes me suspicious. I mean, people used not to have so many allergies. So, it has to be somewhat related to chemicals, He could even be having an allergic reaction to his pillow or other things. I am not saying he does, but it is a possibility. He could also have leaky gut, which causes a person to have allergies and is caused by candida yeasts. If you don't know about it, "google" it. There is a lot of information out there on it and most doctors don't seem to know much about it. So far, the diet has helped me and I am trying to eat mostly organic and only ORGANIC MEAT, as non-organic is really toxic. So far, my head does not burn and I am not losing hair.
Find a good doctor who knows a lot about Leaky Gut and have him checked out. I can tell you of someone you could contact who would know of a good doctor in your area if you are interested.

Good luck.
