Here is something from the Mayo Clinic:
Can stress cause hair loss?

Answer
Stress and hair loss can be related.

The most common type of stress-induced hair loss is telogen effluvium. In this condition, emotional or physical stress — related to a death in the family, pregnancy, severe weight loss or surgery, for example — pushes large numbers of growing hairs into a resting phase. Within a few months, the affected hairs may fall out suddenly when simply combing or washing your hair. The hair typically grows back when the emotional or physical stress is resolved, although this can take months.

For some people, intense stress may trigger a type of hair loss called alopecia areata. In this condition, white blood cells attack the hair follicle — which stops hair growth. Within weeks, the affected hair falls out. The hair loss usually starts as a small round patch but may eventually spread to the whole scalp, and sometimes to body hair as well. The hair generally grows back, but the cycle may repeat itself.

Talk to your doctor if you notice sudden or patchy hair loss or more than usual hair loss when combing or washing your hair. Sudden hair loss can signal an underlying medical condition that requires treatment. If needed, your doctor may suggest treatment options for the hair loss as well.

If this is the case and I have read more online about this topic, If this is true how is it that children even newborns have this as well.
I know no one really knows.

The more I read, the more I realize no one knows a thing about this. First of all, it only occurs in two percent of the population, and secondly, it's cosmetic rather than fatal. Okay, so no one's donating a bunch of money or expending a bunch of energy looking for a cure.

The efficacy of treatment is totally a bogus situation. If it spontaneously resolves itself, how can they claim shooting it with cortisone helps? Or anything else for that matter? How can they be sure it was the treatment and not just the alopecia doin' it's own sweet thing? Hmmm.

Is it caused by stress? I have faced stress down the barrel many times in my life, and while this is a challenging time for me it really cannot hold a candle to a few years ago. And yet my hair is disappearing now. So I don't buy the stress idea at all.

I believe the cause of alopecia is Revenge of the Killer Dolls for all the times we cut or ruined the hair of our baby dolls and Barbies. This has as much research behind it as all the other theories.
I know what you mean there has been plenty of times in my life that were awful and this didn't happen. Ok I know it's not the doll thing cause I didn't cut their hair, and really I played with cars and trucks instead. Oh I had barbies but I had them race not go to the mall. :-) I more I read the less I understand I don't think it's suppose to be like this? No concrete answers of why or who or when, just crazy stuff.

Take care

Thanks for you i mput.

I've often wondered how much "stress" really has to do with it.
I didn't start losing my hair until my 20's, & believe me, life wasn't always sunny, before that! Sorry, I have to laugh at myself about that one! I mean, the teenage years, alone, is enough to make anyone lose their hair!
I do wonder, though, especially about newborns, b/c you don't think babies could be stressed, but, that can be.
Guess we'll just have to wait for science to answer this question for us.
I just don't know really, I am under a great deal of stress right now, since about Oct of 07. I recently lost my house it's a long story. My sister's husband had some problems with the Vietnam war and so he got in trouble over that. She had a hard time with all this. So I was there to help her. While there begin Celiac it was hard to eat I worked in Spokane about a 55 mile drive one way in the snow and ice with my rear wheel drive truck. Interesting how stress can play with our bodies. Right now I am in a not so good situation. So I don't know when I get to California if I start to grow my hair again, I guess in my case I will know.
As far as a baby having AA childbirth is hard a babies and if the mother was sick or didn't carry well did drugs or whatever the baby could be under more stress then most of us. Just ideas.

yes, Major stress to the body can be a cause of hair loss because Stress often results in hair loss due to a number of factors which affect the hair growth cycle
