It's got me wondering. I developed AA Oct 08, had almost total regrowth in Feb 09 and now in the process of losing it again. I'd pretty much got used to the idea that I was going to have issues with my hair and it was no big deal - until last week.
My husband now has AA. No blood tie there, weird aye. We live in the same house and eat the same food so we are thinking it must be food or environment (I'm in NZ so it is currently winter - mould/damp season). We eat well - a good range of veges so are thinking it's probably not food.
Would love to know what others think as it does worry us - how safe/healthy are our children. Is our house/environment causing this?

Check your water supply for possible chemicals from groundwater or factory chemicals, and have the mold inspected. What is your house made of? Any radon? One former member on this site had major problems with mold affecting the health of the whole family.
It's funny you mention this, because I was wondering the same thing this entire week. My environment is very humid and damp, which makes my eczema AND hair loss flare up. But then I went to the beach last Saturday and today (sunny, dry, went in the ocean) and my eczema cleared up and my hair loss dramatically slowed down on both days.
It really made me wonder if all these conditions are related to the environment we're living in... Good question!

Hi,
You mentioned you went to the beach, and it was sunny and dry, and the loss slowed up a bit, what about vit D, I don't know if this is the whole answer, but one I've been thinking about a lot, on another AA site that I belong to, one of the Moms there had started her son on Vit D3, she was told that many in north, or cooler climates are deficient in vit D, and the use of sunscreens (which is good) is also playing a role. Maybe talk to your Dr. about it, my Dr told me to take between 2,000 and 3,000 iu per day, but you can OD on this so you should talk to Dr first. Hope that helped some.

P.S. I have always lost my hair in the fall and winter, and regrew in spring and summer, so this seemed logical to me, that this could play a role. Only thing is for the first time ever I'm losing now!!!! but have had some unusual stress.
i would love to know why and what is causing my AA. My hair is falling out slowly but steadily for a year now. I have beat myself up over trying to think of the how and what I could be doing to cause this. there are so many questions. Maybe stress could be causing it but I am the happiest and least stressed that I have ever been. if it is stress I believe it is internal stress that i can not see or feel but my body is reacting to caused by somethng or some reaction inside my body. I do think environment factors can have a huge array of effects on our bodies internally where we can't see it. No dought in my mind that our hair is indicating something is not right. It is summer here in kansas, USA and my hair started falling out in summer last year. Something is stressing our bodies out and it looks like we are all alone in finding out what. sorry i am rambling I have just found this website and my mind is still full of confusion and eagerness to figure out a common ground that i have with someone and maybe with any luck figure this out. there are so many chemicals in the air and going through our bodies via food, lotions, clothing etc that I have been considering a complete detox of some sort. I have also been reading alot about a connection between allergies and aa. I am going to research this. Do you take any medication? I have been taking spironolactone which I found out is also used to treat excessive hair growth so I wonder if this is hurting me. like I said lots of questions and maybe this is why there is no way of knowing what causes AA because it is an individuals own bodies sensitivity to any number of triggers to vast to narrow it down to put an exact answer to the why.
Hiya Shauna - AA is very weird isn't it. I've been living in my current house for 7 years, eat a fairly good mixed diet and can't be bothered with stressing out. My husband and I haven't really done anything differently for years other than working on our 1930's house to moderise it. This is what has made us wonder about environmental effects - what have we uncovered/distrubed as in moulds etc. Good luck with every thing, visiting our doc together in a week or so and hopefully get heaps of tests done to find of if there is some thing showing on 'both' sets of tests (hubby's and mine) then we can move forward from there.
