My two year old was just diagnosed with Alopecia areata. The dr. prescribed Olux 5% mouse to use 2x's per day. Before filling the prescription, the pharmacist called me to warn that this medicine should not be used in children under the age of 12. I used it one time. Has anyone used this on the their under the age of 12? I don't know what to do...please help!!

My daughter was prescribed the Olux E foam which also says not to use on children under 12. I was very concerned with this as she was only 4 at the time. The pharmacist said the dosage the Dr. had us using was very low compared to what they would prescribe for someone over 12. I talked to her peditrician who said as long as we are careful we would be okay. When I call back the Pediatric dermotologist who prescribed it she told me that she has prescribed it for her own niece who has Alopeica. We used it once a day for 2 weeks, then off for 2 weeks then once a day for 2 weeks again before having to stop using it because her scalp was thinning. We saw a ton of new hair growth...so far it has been the best thing we've used. We saw new hair coming in about a month after we started using it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
I did use it on my 3 year old for a short time 3-6 months with no side affects. I would listen to the physician but go back after 3 months so that the physician can make sure it is working safely. You need to contain the AA.
My baby is 13months and my doctor at Johns Hopkins won't give her anything right now. He wants to just use sunlight for now.
