I need expert advice from all of you experienced online wig shoppers.

I have had AU for a little over a year and a half...(It feels like an eternity). I've purchased synthetic wigs from shops in town, that look and feel fantastic, but that feeling doesn't seem to last long. A favorite of mine was a heat friendly synthetic wig, it let me play with the hair more and felt more natural. As much as I complained about having to spend so much time doing my hair before, I sure miss the process!

I want to try something different, I am curious about ordering a Human Hair wig. I have spent the last week researching and reading so many discussions about ordering wigs online. And I have so many questions. I've heard good things about Cooperwigs.com. I really miss having long hair to play with... I am getting married in August and I want a hairstyle I can have done up for the wedding. I guess some of my questions for those of you who have experience with Human Hair wigs would be:

How is the tangle situation? ..if I order a longer style am I going to be just as frustrated as I am with the synthetic? (Matted and frayed?)

Have the colors you ordered been good or disappointing? ..can you color an ordered human hair wig?

Do you wear them full time? (I read that it's not good for the lace to be constantly be taking them on and off, is this true??)

What are some other pro's and con's a should be aware of before ordering???

Finding a new hairstyle is so stressful. I would give anything to go back to the old days of having bad hair cuts and dye jobs knowing it was going to grow back!

I am also a wig wearer. I advise you to join the www.wigsupport.com website these ladies are fantastic and can give you the help you need. Good luck with your new hair.

I am a wig wearer for more than 15 years. Human hair is much better than synthetic if you have to wear it for long hours. Human hair is softer, cooler and better quality and more natural.

I have ordered couple of wigs online from different websites, normally between 100 to 450 USD ( I mean not very expensive ones) some of them were really good and some of them absolutely terrible! So next time I prefer to pay more but buy a wig from shops after trying them on.

I think now is a kind of fashion wigs. I was very fond of the girl to buy a wig to wear. I often buy some fashionable wigs on a company called EOZY.COM online store.

Hello Ashley Marie

I hope the information I am going to pass on to you is helpful.

Human hair is sometimes a little confusing for those who are buying wigs.  There are two types of human hair with very different outcomes and results for the wearer.

Processed human hair (is obviously processed) and will often start it life as dark to medium dark hair.  Depending on the way it is processed it can be quite damaged as a result.  Some methods are less harsh but if the hair is processed in any way it comes with problems that you should understand as a wearer.  I would also advise that when you are buying a wig ask if the hair is processed at all.  If it is, ask what does that mean to you a a wearer.  Processed human hair should be of reasonable price as it makes the manufacturing of this type of wig far cheaper. (Tangling can be more prevalent with processed human hair) - colouring processed human hair can have unexpected results so you must be careful.

100% unprocessed virgin human hair.  This mean the hair in the wig you are buying has had no processing done on it.  Not by the original grower of the hair or after the hair is cut and used in a wig.  This is expensive hair, but also very beautiful.  It reacts and looks as people's growing hair does.  It has all the variations and limitations that the people of the world have with their hair. My personal choice is this type of hair, as it has worked well for me and my daughter over the years she has been dealing with alopecia.  It is not for everyone, but I do love it.  (Tangling is no more prevalent than those with growing hair).  Colouring this type of hair will have expected results as with those with their own growing hair.

Lace wigs are often made with processed hair as the hair and lace often last a similar amount of time.

Other cap types combined with unprocessed virgin human hair can create a wig that has great longevity and durability.

I'll put a couple of photo's of updo's you can achieve with Freedom Wigs that I really love.  They may not be for you but it may be helpful (Freedom Wigs only used 100% unprocessed virgin human hair in their wigs, this does't mean they are available without limitations to colour and length, it really depends on your needs as they are fully customised).

Good luck with finding something that works for you.

Rosy

Rosy, that wig looks absolutely natural.  No one would ever know.  But, how did it become that light color blonde?  Is it still unprocessed?

Hi Lexi

This is the thing that people struggle to understand with a Freedom wig.  Freedom does not use processed hair...this gives the owner of the wig the option to colour their hair if they wish.  As you can see with this lady she has coloured her own Freedom wig to the colour she wants.  I personally love what she does as it looks so natural.  Freedom gives a base colour then she works with a hairstylist to achieve the look she wants.  This lady even puts a bit of regrowth in her wig with her stylist.

As you only have to colour the hair once, it leaves your Freedom hair healthy and beautiful.  (not like with growing hair, which people have to colour constantly to achieve this type of look).

Hope this helps.

Rosy

Ok, now I finally get it.  Virgin unprocessed hair can THEN be colored.  It looks lovely.  Thanks so much Rosy. You are such a help to so many on here who are struggling with what to do with hair loss.  We all thank you.

Hi. My name is Mark S Hansen. I have had AU for over 45 yrs. My parents bought me my 1st wig when I was 15. I wore one, and bought a new one about every three yrs, until about 10 yrs ago when I finally took it off for good. Over the years I have had both human hair and synthetic wigs, ranging from 250-400.00+/- Both wigs suited me fine at the time bec most I assumed, were almost completely undetectable. I think that how long they last depends not only on the quality of the wig, but your lifestyle. I have been working out running etc for over 40 yrs. I am not up to date any longer on wig styles and new fabrics.

But in my former experience with both human hair and synthetic wigs, they slowly stretched out, they both faded out, especially the human hair, which started dark brown and faded almost to blond from the sun. In both cases the silicone cap base did get eaten away or eroded by the acidity in my perspiration, until it started to rip after a couple of years. I would often put double sided tape on the ripped areas to keep the wig as long as I could so as not to have to fork out more money for a new one.

Even back in the 70's and 80's + I saw wigs and even had the opportunity to by wigs that that did and do cost 1000's of $. but my parents nor I could never afford them and my insurance did not pay for them. Furthermore, I always figured that if the ones I were wearing were undetectable, and I would have to tell any woman that I approached, in a bar, in college eventually anyways, about my condition, what's the point?

Bottom Line is that if you want to make an investment like that in time (I had to hand wash and style mine at least 2 times a week, put it on a maniquin and let it dry over night) and money, I would not in any way buy a wig on line. The place I used to go to was Kings Head hair Goods on Van Buren St in Milwaukee WI.

Thanks

Mark s Hansen

Hi there,

I have had AU for more than 30 years, and I use wig since that time.I live in Brazil and I have some difficulty to find different types of wig here.  The type I use is made of human hair and entwined in one piece. I use tape for fixing it. I found your post  very interesting  because I would also try to buy wigs online and also have no experience about it.

I'm going to Miami next week and wondered if anyone here could advise me somewhere in Miami to buy wigs made with virgin  human hair? Any advice which website that can deliver wigs in Brazil?.

Hello AshleyMarie,

I am the owner of Compassionate Creations Wig Design and I would like to share some information about wig purchasing. There are many different types and qualities of hair to purchase. I would always recommend trying on a piece before actually purchasing it if it was not made custom to your specific measurements . This way, you are not discouraged when you receive a product that isn't exactly what you are looking for. It is also very important to choose a density that is similar to your own, that way there is not too much hair in the piece which can make it look "wigggy".

When purchasing any wig, it is important to know the process that it has been through. A lot of companies will sell "human hair" which is a trick that the industry uses to make people believe that they are ordering quality wigs when in actuality, the wigs are extremely processed. Most all "human hair" wigs are the exact same quality as extension hair which you can purchase by the pack. Eventually extensions must be replaced by new hair because the coating has worn off and the hair begins to mat and tangle. There is no real difference between these types of hair only a difference is how it is worded.

The reason human hair wigs are coated is because manufacturers want to hide the porosity of the hair by coating it. It is very easy and cheap to find dark hair and lighten or "process" it to make it look like it is naturally a lighter color and in order for big companies to do this they must mass produce and mass process. In doing so, they cannot keep the integrity of the hair or keep it in decent quality (since different types of hair process faster than others) thus damaging the hair.  Once this coating wears off, the hair is useless and unmanageable.

I hope this information was helpful and have you some insight on wig purchasing. You can check out my product on the website below. Thanks!!!
