I have had AA for 20 years. Recently, July, I shaved bcz I lost about 80% of my hair. I have lost brows and lashes. I believe this is turning into AU, less and less hair on scalp and arms legs, etc. I am finding myself with getting stys in my eyes frequently. They will burst and I end up with pink eye. Also more colds...losing nose hair too. Sorry if this is TMI :). Has anyone else dealt with this? Suggestions? Thanks!

Get on a good mineral

Hi everyone,
Thought I would update you all. After much research, through this long, long winter I beagn using echinecea, elderberry syrup, and several vitamins. Everyone in my home got these horrible viruses it went around about 3 times -- I had NONE! Nothing! At one point all 6 of my other family members were ill at once...except me! When the viruses were starting to hit, I up'd my vit C, took garlic and bee propolis. Hope this might help someone ;-)
Yes! I did zinc too. I love traditional medicinal teas. I often do throat coat and mix honey and dropperful of echinacea ;)
That is a very interesting question! I have Universalis now, so I am not sure how to gauge it at this point. I started on natural boosters after my unversalis, so I dont know. I do know that I did not get sick when the rest of my family was ill.

Something I have come across lately is something called "leaky gut". I am interested in knowing if that is related to my alopecia. In the last few days I have learned about this GAPS diet. So I will be investigating that more.

I know that was unrelated to your question though. :) sorry.
Think about it this way, years ago we would have been hard pressed to hear of 10 people that have Crohns, Alopecia, fibromyalgia ect... What has changed? Our food. My son that has or had alopecia made me investigate options, I was introduced into a company that had all natural products that are NOT GMO and when his hair grew back I was hooked. I would encourage anyone of you to check it out, I am not looking to get rich I so badly want people not to have to hurt either body mind spirt or heart. Not to be ashamed, not to be a slave to experiment medications. That's my goal. Please go the and if anyone wants more info just ask, if I don't know I will find the answers. http://wrapwithkarenlanctot.com/

Please check out this review of the GAPs diet.  The author makes many important points.   I am ALWAYS sceptical of any diet claims that 'cures' illness without ANY ethical based research to back it up.  This is the diet that aims to cure autism and that vaccines are the cause of autism.  This is dangerous and unsubstantiated information.  Believe me I would love to simply change my diet and have all of the hair on my body return (I have AU).  I am all for healthy eating but I am not naive to think that healthy eating will bring back my hair.   All I am saying is make informed choices.

So I just returned from seeing my dermatologist.  There are currently no new treatments for AA.  He said he doesn't even know if there is any current research being done.  'AA is not profitable for funders'.  We did discuss drug therapies (which neither of us recommend).   Way too many side effects....and once you stop the hair falls out.  He is also VERY clear that Diets DO NOT WORK for alopecia.  There are NO evidence based research on this.  There is NOthing linking gluten to Alopecia.  He thinks the GAPS is BS.

I asked him about care of my scalp.  He said use Dove fragrance free to wash and CeraVe moisturizing lotion for dry scalp.

He did suggest Latisse for eyelashes.  This is a treatment for  glaucoma patients.  One of the side effects is eyelash growth  its a $200 investment.

Thats all my news.

On another note we spoke about resources (emotional) for those with AA.  There is next to nothing.  As it happens I let him know that I have opened a private practice here in Port Credt (south Mississauga, Ontario).  I am a clinical social worker specializing in Children's Mental Health.

Michelle - that is great that you sound encouraged! :) I dont believe in any miracle "cure" I do know that I have other ailments I would like to clear up. My husband and I are/were nurses. Honestly, I had to stop working bcz ethically I couldnt anymore. I wanted to help ppl, and much of what I encountered went completely against what I believe - ethically and moraly. It is all perspective. Its awesome that you have found information that you feel could help you! :) one thing for sure is that I have been completely encouraged by is despite differing opinions, we have one commonality, that many dont, which is Alopecia. Just knowing I am not alone and from all parts of the world are people with Alopecia. :)

has anyone done the MINERALS?  just go to a Natural Store or Order from Swanson and try it for 3 months it is cheap and if nothing happens Minerals are good for us.  I am not even going to ask anyone to look at my website again just try the mineral.  The idea was not mine to try it came from a Neurologist and a Chiropractor.  What do you have to lose?

Thanks for the info Michelle.
