I've read of a few ladies (who actually already have hair, no alopecia) who have enjoyed wearing wigs more than their natural hair.

One person said she liked wigs more because her real hair was thin - she actually managed to pass hers off and received a lot of compliments on her wig!

Another who had a synthetic wig said it was easier to maintain because as someone who traveled a lot, she had no need to carry around so many styling products and heating tools. She also could show up everyday with "perfect" hair (no bad hair days at all).

The last one wore wigs to protect her real hair.

So I'm wondering if anyone here has come to like wearing them, even preferring it? I know wigs can sometimes feel itchy, hot, and so on but as someone very new to all of this, I'm trying to look on the brighter side. I've been looking at a lot of wigs online and they look absolutely gorgeous, though I hope I'm not getting ahead of myself here :p

Fake eyelashes of course look way better than my natural lashes (yes, including the ones I had before alopecia). I think Ardell 109 or 110 look the most natural. Eyebrow wigs seem interesting but I haven't played around with those yet.

Overall I'm just curious how everyone's experience has been.

Thank you for your time :)

I am a man with alopecia who decided to start wearing wigs after about 10 years of varying degrees of patching hair loss, etc.  I enjoy wearing wigs, and have three wigs at the point with different styles and slightly different colors (black to light brown).  People know that I have alopecia, and I certainly don't hide.  I enjoy wearing wigs for me; I don't do it for others.

My partner is a Hair Club member because of balding.  It is the same story: he does it for him, not for others.  He does not hide that he is a Hair Club member.  After you do it for a while, it becomes part of the normal routine.

Good to hear that you like wearing them. Your confidence to be open and wear wigs for yourself is awesome :)

Hi Brian; I was curious, what in your opinion, is the best most undetectable, natural wig you've had? and where can you get these? ive searched all over for men's hair, (full cap, I mean) vacuum types, but all I get is info for the ladies. help.

Edmond

Hi, Edmond.  Sorry I missed your question.  I get my wigs from various companies and brands.  To be honest, I have a Bobbi Boss Maji MH1244 wig that is human hair that I like a lot.  Most wigs are for women, which is mostly what I buy.  I thin them out with a razor comb and trim around the ears.

Most synthetic wigs only last about three months, so I don't buy expensive wigs.  What you will find is most people will not know you are wearing a wig.  Just buy wigs that have a style that you like.  For me, I prefer wigs that have a part line and are tapered on the sides and back.

Mine wig is around 2 year old and it still looks awesome. i bought from https://shop.wigsbuy.com/

I lost all of my hair at once and very fast, immediately bought a wig. It was wayyyy too uncomfortable, I work in a hot environment where I'm usually running around for most of my shift. One day I ripped it off and, while it was hard at first, I came to enjoy being hairless more than wigs. I had such a negative first experience with wigs which, I think, made me hate them. Now, after almost 2yrs of the same hairstyle I do seem to be wearing them more often, I'd even say I enjoy it. It's nice to spice things up. I could even see me over time enjoying them more if I became more comfortable with playing around with them. As for hairy people wearing wigs, I'd say that's a pretty normal thing. I'm a white American but I work around a lot of Haitian women and so many of them seem to wear wigs everyday. Maybe it's more common in other cultures?

That's nice that there are other women around you that seem to wear wigs everyday. I don't think I've come across anyone but then again I do not really pay attention. It's because I assume everyone's hair is real to begin with. For example I had no idea that the actress playing Regina George in Mean Girls was wearing one. Apparently other people can tell - whether they really can or they are just bragging about their skills, I do not know. I've been looking at a few videos on Youtube and some are more obvious than others.

Wow!

I thought there would be a lot more responses!  I'm sure there will be.  I didn't like wearing wigs at first.  Mainly because of how much hair they used to pile up on those things.  I guess at one time, wig manufacturers  thought the national census was - the more hair the better.

They've refined their tastes according to the masses, and wigs are looking a lot more natural these days.  Especially the synthetics - which is surprising.  They used to be too shiny/plastic looking.  If you took at a wig from the 1980's and compared it to today's?  There would be a contrasting difference.  Thanks to "Futura" fibers and "Kanekalon" .. which has a duller sheen, and more realistic.

I used to lurk on  "hair growing" forums, an learned that millions of ladies are using wigs as "protective styles".. They just braid up their own natural hair and wear whatever wig suits their tastes without having to damage their own. And of course, because they don't have alopecia? They have hair down past the backs of their knees, and in most cases, down to their ankles. (Lucky!)

These ladies are of all ethnicities.  Asian, Polynesian, Samoan, African American, India, Caucasian, etc.  They call it "Wiggin' it"..LOL.

My hair has been growing back since 11/16/2105.  That's right... I've kept a journal of the times it's grows, falls out, repeat, grows, falls out, repeat.. Since November?  It has stopped falling out, and keeps growing except for 3 palm-sized spots.  Two on the crown and one on the right temple.  Each one of these areas has fuzz that's growing in slower than the rest of the hair on my head which is shoulder length in the back and under the chin in the front..

Thus, i cannot go out and proudly show off my natural hair without those 3 moth-eaten looking areas standing out.:(

Depending on the style and brand of the wigs?  I think that even after i've grown all my hair in a couple of years?  I might occasionally indulge in a wig or two every once in a while.:)

Well, I hope there will be more responses :p I certainly appreciate everyone who has replied so far.

I have heard a lot of how far synthetic hair has come these days in looking more natural. The fact that there are even synthetics that can tolerate heat styling is amazing. I think wigs may have gained a little in popularity thanks to pop culture such as through Kylie Kardashian who has shown her own little collection. There are trending synthetic brands like PowderRoomD.

I had thought of hair extensions before alopecia but never wigs. "Wiggin' it?" Lol. Now knowing what I know, I think with or without hair, wigs seem interesting to experiment with. Of course I'd like to seem as natural as possible though. You seem quite knowledgeable, do you happen to have any tips?

That's wonderful news that your hair is finally growing back! Have you done anything differently to achieve those results?

PowderRoomD,

I'll be on their website right i finish here! :)  There's another website that i like that sells some pretty nice wigs (synthies) for about $40.00.  FridayNighthair.com.  The hairlines on those wigs have shown us that we have come a LONG WAY from those Samurai sword fight wig hair lines back in the day - when you needed to wear the wig off the face.

Hair Extensions were the number one killer for me.  They braided in the extensions - which means not only did i have diabetes (an autoimmune catalyst) that might have been the culprit for the AA afterwards?  But it was exacerbated with TRACTION alopecia.

The beauticians saw that big giant bald-spot sitting right there on the crown of my head but didn't say a word about it.  They just made make-shift tracks over the bald spots, anchored them on an area that had hair, and sewed in the extensions.

After i gave up extensions?  I had several bald patterns.  The left temple was completely gone all the way past the left ear. It was the weirdest "mohawk" i've ever had.

That finally grew back in permanently about a year ago.  And immediately after that? Out came the RIGHT side all the way past the crown crossing over to the left ear.  Completely shiny and bald.

I had stopped wearing extensions since 2007.  The moment i discontinued the extensions, my scalp was able to relax - and all hell broke loose. That's when i began wearing wigs, because i couldn't go back to extensions.  There were different balding patterns every 6 months all the way until 11/2015.  I could literally predict the month i would have the hair fall.  The worst was always the winter months.

In 4/2015, i began and discontinued Rogaine within a month.  I started seeing fuzz at the crown within 2 weeks of using it?  There wasn't one hair growing at the Right temple at all.  Actually, what little fuzz i had there - fell out while using Rogaine.  So, i decided to experiment with it.  After about 6 weeks, i stopped using it.  BOOM..

All of the hair fell out at the crown - plus the back, and the palm sized bald patch at the Right Temple - increased to the entire Right side of my head.

I had been also taking several "hair growing pills", i made home made concoctions (Cayenne Pepper/Garlic/Shea Butter/Carrier Oils, Bhringaraj oil, Ayurvedic oils, pastes, shampoos, conditioners, you name it?  I put it on my scalp).

I took Andrew Lessman hair growing pills, Biotin, Magnesium, Potassium-Iodide pills, Folliform DHT Blockers, Hair Omega DHT blockers, if it blocked it - i took it.

Then we have our multivitamins.  The gluten free diets, the hair growing teas, etc.

This on top of the stress of working all over the country on contracts.

Then peri-menopause, replete with diabetes.

Please note that all of these pills were an affluence of over 8 years.  Not something taken all at once.  But i guess the emphasis of "growing my hair back" became so much of an obsession - i didn't realize just how much time/money i had invested.

11/2015? i gradually stopped all of these concoctions, vitamins, DHT blockers, the whole enchilada. (gluten free).. LOL!

I didn't have that much hair BEFORE i started taking these products?  And i basically ended up with even less hair WHILE taking them.  I absolutely had NOTHING to show for all those supplements i was taking 3x a day.

2 weeks after i discontinued the products - my Left temple grew in and STAYED (and keeps growing). The back - right and left sides - grew in and stayed and still growing.

The crown is growing in gradually with two 1/2" fuzzy palm-size spots,  and the right temple is now down to a a fuzzy less palm-size spot.

There isn't a MOMENT were i see some miracle cure that i'm not tempted to jump on the band-wagon?  But i stop myself, pat my fuzz, and say: "Let's just wait on that"..

I think that overdosing on all of the vitamins, might have been a problem of toxification.  I had someone ultrasound my liver, and it was perfect, but my kidneys definitely were fighting an uphill battle.  I had them re-checked, and they're nice and plump again.

Some of my alopecia was "self-inflicted", but also due to other stressors as well.

I had gotten rid of some of the problem?  But i'll never ever get rid of being menopausal, or diabetes.

That should be a good read for tonight! LOL!:)

I think PowderRoomD isn't the most natural at 150-180% density. It's just something popular at the moment among trendy hairy people :p Have you ordered from Fridaynighthair.com already? It looks quite nice - good variety of selections and at those prices, it sounds like a steal! I'm curious about the quality and how natural it looks though.

Wow, you've tried a lot of things. I have a food allergy test coming up later this week, so I'll see how that goes. I bought a bottle of D3 vitamins and took a look at the Autoimmune Protocol Diet (ahh it sounds so hard). Stress, yes, is a huge component of all this for me as well. Then again, it's hard not to stress when there's hair falling everywhere! :p I've heard of people suddenly having their hair grow back when they stopped caring, so minimizing stress is huge. Relax and hopefully your hair will grow all back for you, too.

Well, if you're going to take the Vitamin D3's? Swanson
