I have been diagnosed with Androgenic Alopecia.  I am post menopausal.  No females or males in my family have experienced hair loss or thinning.  I have been to many doctors who are rude and insensitive.  I have purchased the hairmax laser band and have tried various shampoos.  Haven't tried rogaine and really do not want to begin.  I would like to know if anyone has had new hair growth with any shampoos or natural products.  I live in West Virginia and am also wondering if anyone has went to any doctors in the Maryland, D.C., Virginia, Pa, or Eastern Region that have been  understanding, helpful and willing to listen regarding hair loss issues and offered any productive solutions?  I just feel very alone with this issue and it just seems that most people just don't understand.  Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi Connie - I was diagnosed at age 54 with AU in February 2017.  I live in Maryland and saw Dr. Anna Chien with John's Hopkins University. She sees patients both in Columbia, MD and Baltimore, MD. She's a bit tough to get into see, but she's  very understanding, extremely helpful and is very compassionate.  She didn't suggest any shampoos or natural products, she told me that they don't necessarily help with alopecia.  She put me on a few meds, one of which caused me a severe allergic reaction.  I ended up taking Xeljanz and did have hair growth,  but stopped after a few months because of the side effects.  I can't get in to see her again until August and plan to talk to her about other options then.  It can be really tough, but you are far from alone.  Good luck.

Hi Connie. It's sad to hear that you've not had a great reception from your doctors, I can imagine it must be very frustrating! Please remember that you are not alone, there are a lot of options for you, and this community is full of great advice to help while you find a decent doctor.

In terms of shampoos, I know that there are certain things to look for in the ingredients like salicylic acid, keratin and pro vitamin b5 which all help hair grow. I think this article is quite helpful for explaining what to look for (and what to avoid!)

I hope it helps you :)
