Hi I’m in UK, and we get a little help with our wigs if we suffer from Alopecia, unfortunately to use that allowance we can only pick from a limited choice. For the last 5/6yrs my local "wig lady" was in a small hairdresser, so you went in with or without your wig, your choice, and you went through to the rear of the shop, to be welcomed by a wonderful lady who made you feel at home, safe and comfortable. going through to the rear, nobody knew you wore a wig. She knew all of her clients and was very knowledgeable.
This year she has lost the "contract" and a new company has taken over, based 200 miles away, it has a hair clinic, within in the oncology unit of my local main hospital. I was very shocked when I rang to make an appointment to find that it was within this unit. I am very thankful that my baldness is due to alopecia and not to chemo treatment. But I’m not comfortable at the prospect of going into the oncology department.
Now I know that may sound to some a bit like everything we are objecting to with assuming people make about us.
I am wondering what is the procedure the rest of you go through, is it a private salon, hospital, specialist wig shop? It will be interesting to hear.
I am going this afternoon to my "new" supplier, and will report back as to how things go. Meanwhile, get writing !!!!!

Well I am happy to say, my appointment was brilliant. The worry I had about changing from what I was used to was unfounded. The appoointment was in the Macmillian Centre, which for those of you that are not in the UK is "Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer " its a relaxed enviorment, with lovely people.
The lady I met was great, the first thing she said was, I too have alopecia. My thoughts were great, somebody who understands.
It has been 18mth since I have had wigs on the NHS, and boy the rules have changed. The amount they allow you on each wig has doubled, and they have scrapped the rule of only being able to choose from a small selection. Also if I wanted a wig of a higher cost, I can now pay the difference, which was not allowed previously. Wonderful.
So it has been a good experiance, which for a alopecia sufferer and red tap, is rare. Does this mean, alopecia sufferers in the UK, are atarting to be treated with respect.
So I stand corrected, I should take my own advice.................. and not judge before trying !

hello all,
How about just buying it online, you must know what you need or like by now? I mean you can get some information from your former lady to help, if need be.

There is a site I found that offers the same type of wigs that even movie stars buy----

looking good......lace front wigs
i definitely do all my wig shopping online. i get them from everywhere. i haven't found one that i haven't liked yet. i think i have ten or eleven now. you can get them pretty cheap online.
Hi Gill

If you are interested in a Freedom wig you can sometimes get these through the NHS. I don't fully understand how your NHS works but all the Freedom Agencies in your country will be able help. There are agencies in Wales(Cardiff), Scotland(Edinburgh), England (Oxford), Ireland (Dublin).

Hope that helps.

I have 10 wigs now and love them.I am currantly getting one custom made which is my 11th one.I buy them from a shop I know.
I would love to be left alone in a good wig shop for a few hours. I would try on wigs that I knew where not me, blonde curly, down my back (the wig that is)! Bright red pixie ones. I would be like a kid in a sweety shop. Hey I may ring my local wig shop to ask what they would charge for 4 exclusive hours use of their shop ?? OK Im off to put that on my christmas wish list....................honestly Snta I have been good all year !!!!!! well nearly all year.

I have to have some laughter, thats how I cope with it. Life is too short, and look on the bright side, you dont die of alopecia ! Might be harsh, but true.
Hi Gill,

I went to a 'extra' hair salon in Glasgow. I really enjoyed it as they really put me at ease and I swear my mum was tearing up because of how good the wigs looked. The one I loved then hasn't lasted that well but I'm just about ready to get a new prescription and I know what I want this time around - although I keep thinking, "wouldn't it be great to have an extra long, extra blond one", "wouldn't it be great to try a short bob" "wouldn't it be great to...."

Can I ask how much you end up paying? I met up with a girl who moved to London and found that her local trust didn't support the wigs as much as they did for me. For two wigs, I paid £10 as each prescription is £5 in Scotland but she paid about £50 for hers. I was just interested to see if there is actually a postcode lottery for wig prescriptions.

Do you think it would be odd to ask Santa for a new wig?

x
Hi Erica
Nice to "meet" you. I have done the long blonde one, I looked like a transvestite according to my daughter ! I used to have long auburn hair when I was young, but anything below the shoulders now doesnt suit me. At 51 not many women have long hair.

The new place I go to get my wigs, is within the Macmillian Unit of the hospital, and its a lovely place. As for cost, we have to pay the perscription cost of £52 per wig, we are allowed to spend up to £200 per wig on NHS, if the wig is £250, then £50 is down to us + the £52 perscription charge. So we are not really being given anything.
I have AU, so the chance of my hair returning is very very slim, and I think we should be given 2 wigs per year free, up to £250 per wig. Im not sure if it is a case of postcode, possibly, obviously Scottish health service is different. I have family in Oz and long term alopecia patients get free wigs.
I am waiting for my new wig, its a new make for me, cant remember what its called and its from a German maker, just have to see how it lasts.
Yes definatly able to ask Santa for a new wig, I am going to, comes just under Shaun from Eastenders!
Hope your new one is good, wig that is !
