Profile

Relationship Status:
Single
About Me:
Ex-Michigan gal, now a Californian. I have had AA since age 10, and even though I have had regrowth at times, it's been mostly gone on my head since age 40. I have experienced a multitude of treatments, head coverings, attitudes and choices over the years, but the biggest choice has been to go for the things I really want, alopecia or not! By the way, I am allergic to cats and dogs, wool, cocktail shrimp and peanut butter...so I do keep those far away from my life! I guess I spent most of my years in colleges...fine art, psychology, counseling, interpersonal communication, art therapy, illustration, teaching, now pursuing a special ed credential. Maybe, with my own AA/AT/AU experience and education, plus motherhood, I was destined to talk to people on this site...but mostly with people here who actually have alopecia or a child with it. Tell me about you first.
Do you have alopecia?
Alopecia totalis
Are you 18 or older?
Yes

Bravery after 40

Once we hit 40, it seems we get the bravery to ignor attitudes about our words, choices, opinions, lifestyle, laziness, etc. For me, that has included bravely wearing very different wigs in public, even within the same week, in the same small town. Keep 'em guessing, keep 'em amused. Who cares? What are they going to do, arrest me? If anything, the ones who are interested will find their own bravery to approach ME! Click on my page here if you want to see 3 1/2 different looks and colors!

Biological clock ticking?

How many of you never-marrieds are stressing that you may have the baby clock run out before your hair grows back enough to "catch" a man? Anyone admitting to still being in this space, culturally or otherwise, in 2008? How many of you have thrown out the hair limitation entirely for yourself and have gone ahead to have a child or adopt as a single? Has anyone reached out to adopt, foster, or become a Big Sister to a child with alopecia? I know many alopecians have met someone who loved and marr… Continue

Wig tips for the hairline

I just got my blond-highlighted wig cut, thinned, banged, moussed etc. for a back-to-teaching change. (The photo you see here is before the trim.) The stylist gave me a new tip: where the edge of the wig is so obvious at the hairline (temples), pull a few strands forward towards the forehead to cover and soften the look at the edges of the wig, at both sides of the forehead. Works great on shorter wigs! Also, keep part of wig where bangs start up at the natural hairline, not pulled too low over… Continue

Comebacks for wisecracks

Once in awhile I hear great comebacks for comments about baldness, but I then forget them. For the sake of those starting new semesters at school or new jobs, does anyone have some politically correct, thought-producing or funny comebacks to use? Please give age/grade level for the younger set so the kids don't end up in the principal's office.

Used wigs

Is there a place to send, sell or donate old wigs that I have outgrown or no longer want, or wigs that are a little frayed and thus more gardening/sports/driving/Halloween worthy than close-up worthy? I am talking several colors and styles, medium to large cap size, all synthetic except one.

I love the pics, Bogie, your hair looks great. I'm a sucker for turquoise jewelry too, your necklace is to die for or TDF as my daughter texts me, be good and stay blessed!

Did you remove the old one that was sideways? I am really horrible at computer stuff, LOL. Copying and pasting is about all I know. Carmella or Frank could probably help you better than me.

Oh my goodness...thank you so much for your encouragement about my first wig. You are really amazing and your words helped me to get myself out of the house wearing it. Thank you so much!!! You are so great!
