I have AU, and have had if for about 4 months now...at Christmas I was a full natural blonde, but not so much anymore. I have already got myself some great wigs though, and am pretty pleased with it all! Although you may be a bit annoyed at your GP for saying what he did unfortunately its probably all he could say as the general concensus is that there is not a lot to help or prevent it. Anyway, I know a great dermatologist in Aberdeen, if you want I can give you his name. He told me what was happening, honestly and then helped me to deal with it. He also told me about all the different treaments available and wht is good and bad about them. He really knows his stuff and is very kind.
Anyway, I hope that things do get better for you and us lot are always here for those random alopecia questions you wouldn't dare to ask anyone else!
Cheers

Have you received a diagnosis for your hairloss? I'm AA but I have seen a dermatologist through the NHS but only to learn that there isn't a lot I can do. But it does all depend on what's causing your hairloss so I'd definitely look into it all a bit further.
If you have any questions on talking to your GP etc, just let me know. I'm not an expert but it was about five years ago that I first started talking to my GP about my alopecia.
