About Me:
Hi everyone!

I'm 32 years old. I'm a high school teacher, and live in beautiful Prince Edward Island, Canada.
I have had Alopecia Areata since I was about 12 years old. It was never too severe at first, just a few spots here and there, which were easily covered up because I had beautiful long thick curly hair. Eventually, though, the spots started getting more and more widespread, and I had to come up with more and more creative hairstyles in order to cover them up. And then, one day when I was 26, I got in the shower and PING! every hair on my head fell out, including my eyebrows and eyelashes. It was pretty devastating for me. I ran out and bought the first wig I found (an ugly, ill-fitting one), and never talked to anyone about it. Doctors put me on steroids, both oral and shots. They didn't do much for me aside from a huge (nearly 100-pound) weight gain.
I wondered if I'd ever feel "normal". I thought that no one would ever be able to see past the hair loss and want to be in a relationship with me.
Luckily, I met a wonderful man who is now my husband. I am now very open about my alopecia (my students all know I wear a wig, and while some of them might think it's weird, I don't feel ashamed at all whereas when my hair first fell out I went to GREAT lengths to hide it from EVERYONE) and don't really *mind* going out without my wig (although it's usually too cold for that).
Still, though, I've never fully accepted my baldness. If there was some kind of magic wand I could wave, and have my hair back, I'd be flapping the thing around like a crazy bird woman.
Do you have alopecia?
Alopecia totalis
Are you 18 or older?
Yes

Summer's over!

I haven't written in two months - that's crazy. Mainly because we went on a trip, and then were stuck there for a month instead of two weeks (it was AWFUL!) when our car broke down in the boonies and we couldn't find a mechanic who knew how to fix it (It's a FORD, for the love of pete). Anyway. Not only do I have alopecia, but I also have PCOS. So I have kind of a dichotomy going on - bald head, but chin hairs. HOW IS THIS FAI… Continue

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

I turned 32 years old yesterday... that makes it what, twenty years with some form of alopecia, six years with complete baldness. BUT WHATEVER. Today I my new wig came in the mail and OH MY GOD I LOVE IT. I still can't afford a full lace wig or a vacuum wig. That's fine by me though because this is a GORGEOUS wig. BEAUTIFUL quality. I ordered it from wigs.md, so instead of the nearly$250 (with shipping) that it was at wigs.com, I got it for $170 (and then had to pay $15 for customs but still t… Continue

Well, that was weird...

My husband and I are both big nerds, so I'm upstairs in the (air-conditioned) bedroom with the laptop, he's downstairs on his desktop, and we've been sending each other little MSN messages. I was poking around and found this on the Home Shopping Channel website (not sure how long the link will last, sorry if it's not linking… Continue

Eyebras

My mother is very French, and when she does speak English, that's how she pronounces "eyebrows". I lost all my hair a few years back. A couple of months after the hair on my head fell out, all my eyelashes and eyebrows fell out (this took probably two days). I have to say that I never had any slow loss (aside from having AA for years)-- it was all very swift and sudden. My eyebrows did grow back about 3 years ago, which is great by me. The problem now, though, is this:… Continue

Anticlimactic

... It ended up being sort of a non-issue (have you read my last post?). First of all, it turned out that instead of being in a room with two people, I was in with one (the other decided to stay home for the night and just come to the hotel in the morning). Secondly, the lady I was in with got so, um... intoxicated? Yeah, that would be the word. She was passed out in her bed by 10 pm. When I came to bed she was fast asleep. When I woke up, she was still fast asleep. I slept without my wig, and s… Continue

I love your blog. I was also reading up on your tips for defrizzing synthetics. My current piece has maybe a month of life left, and the new one I want is backordered until the very end of August. The horror!

I have read a couple of your blog posts, and you are hilarious! WHat else could I expect from a fellow maritimer (I live in BC now but desperately want to move back). I am new here but glad to find someone from the east coast!

Hello there Louise,
I am just now getting back to the wonderful messages of thoughts and prayers for my daughter, Kristin. I had the best sleep in 10 days last night because she is home from the hospital. Thank you for thinking of us and your prayers were heard loud and clear. Hope all is well with you and yours.
Love and Hugs,
Dotty

Hi glad to see another maritimer on here, my daughter has alopecia and it is total. This year was the longest she has gone without hair and there is no sign of its return, she also how her first eye infection which we were warned she might get, but she is confident and happy too!! Wish there was a support group around this area but who is to say maybe someday.
With school almost over time to slather on lots of sunscreen she laughs when I tell her we have to cover her noggin!!

Thanks. I want to build a hairless Noah's arc. A hairless dog is next. Hairless guinea pigs sound cool . What were their names?
