About Me:
My name is Carol. I have had alopecia for 30 years, since I was 1 year old. I had AA until I was 13 when I lost all the hair on my head and my mom freaked out and bought me a wig. I always stood up for myself when kids from school teased me, often getting into brawls. My schools and parents never communicated so no one understood what I was dealing with and everything was very hush hush. High school was a little bit better, I was still teased but I still had a good group of friends to hang out with which was important because friends will help defend you. At 15 I became AU and have been ever since. I've seen some regrowth during pregnancies and for the last year I have been seeing more growth here and there.

I haven't worn my wig much since 2001 when I finally got online and joined a few alopecia support groups. There weren't many Canadians online back then but I did find a few and some of these people were so inspiring - I wanted to be free like they were, so I ditched my wig. I stopped going to online groups for a while until Alopecia World came to be. Although I noticed a major increase in the amount of Canadians, it was still upsetting to me that there weren't more people closer to me. Canada's a big country!

This is when I started Palopecia. We had our first meeting in May of just this year (2008) and I finally got to meet other people with alopecia. Although this was great and I enjoy doing it very much, it's not enough! Canada has no representative for alopecia, almost all the insurance companies refure to cover wigs and many face discrimination. So, I'm a woman on a mission now - look out Canada, here I come!!!

I feel...

I guess I've kind of gotten used to the fact that I wear a wig at work but it has kind of sucked too. I had a customer with alopecia the other day but I didn't have time to say anything, had I not been wearing a wig it might have come up and I would have been able to mention it but you can't do that discreetly and quickly at the same time. Then yesterday, a girl I worked with elsewhere, came to me. I recognized her right away and she just couldn't for the life of her, remember who I was. Then I… Continue

Hi Carol!
I know how you feel about the wig. I feel exactly the same way when I wear mine. I just don't feel like me. I'm sorry work is kinda a bummer for ya. Just remember that work is not your life - it's your way of making money so at the end of the day you can go home to your life. ;o) At least that's what I tell myself to make it a little easier.

Hi Carol...when I put in the link it brought me to all the blog posts-not a specific one. I do my best to not let what other people have to say bother me.
Keep Shining!

Hi Carol!

Just staying in touch and saying hello, I've been checking the events coming around my area, and I am trying to make it to the workshop meeting on August in Richmond Hill, it would be my first, also I would love to be able to make it to your home town Guelph too sometime.
Anyway, I hope you are having a nice week!

Hi Carol,

Most Aussies just flock to the beach to escape the summer heat. Sorry to hear you have to wear a wig in that sort of weather. I think your spray bottle is excellent. Although, may I make one suggestion? As you’re spraying the icy cold water try thinking about ice hockey :)
(Sorry, I wish I could think of a better solution)

Cheers

Hi Carol, thanks for your comment. I'll wait and see what happens, but as I've said I'm not too bothered either way. You look wonderful in your picture - I wish I had the confidence to go without my wig - I don't look too bad but I don't think I could cope with the, I assume, constant staring. I work at my local hospital, so am meeting members of the public every day, which I think I would find difficult without my wig, if it was just a matter of being with my colleagues in the office it wouldn't be so bad, they all know about my alopecia and are very supportive. Take care.

Hi Carol, we're in the depths of winter over here in Melbourne. It’s cold, windy but sadly no rain (we need plenty of rain to get us out the drought).
I doubt Melbourne’s winter compares to a Canadian winter. A cold day for us is 14°C. I’m a fan of the cooler weather so this weather doesn’t bother me.
