About Me:
My first encounter with Alopecia was back in 1993 when I was dying my hair and perming my hair like crazy. And I got a brilliant idea to try this crap I saw on a late night info-mercial about a hair care product called “Rio Hair”; it was suppose to be an all natural product to relax curly hair. Yeah well, silly me bought into that “infomercial” and purchased a kit. I put this “all natural stuff from Brazil” in my hair and guess what happened.

The spots started a few days later and I went to a dermatologist who gave me creams that burned my scalp and then I went through the pain of cortisone shots, which was the most painful. The hair came back for awhile and when it would come out again I was able to cover up the spots with the hair I had left. Maybe a few months passed and my hair grew back again, except for the nape of my neck…that area was burned by the cream and never really came back very well.

As the years went on my hair would come and go with the circle spots here and there and I was able to wear a short Afro style for some years until the unthinkable happened…bigger spots started to form. So I shaved my head bald for the first time in 1995 or 1997, I can't remember. I tried to be the Nubian Queen I was raised to be and sport my baldness with style and trying to become gainfully employed with the look of a rebel or angry Black women was not what “Corporate America” was looking for in the 90's. My hair would still grow in and fall out more so than not, so I had to grow accustom to wearing wigs. I started having fun with the wigs because it allowed me to wear any style and color I wanted. Each one of my wigs had names and I was able to play the attitude of that name…

I had fun with it!

I have been living with Alopecia Areta off and on for 12 years and now it has progressed to Alopecia Totalis these last 2 years I have been completely bald, I have no patches, and there is no sign of hair returning. It’s been over 18 months now since I had to shave my head… there’s one side of my head where the baby hair wants to come in, so I may have to touch that up every now and then, I have some crazy wiry gray hairs strands on the sides wanting to grow in, but pretty much I am going to be bald. I like it that way because my wigs are not as hot when I do wear them.

I started going out into the world here recently, showing my baldness on the weekends and when going out to the grocery stores or just out with my husband....

But before I use to wear hats and scarves because the sun is so hot were I live and I would get cold easily going in and out of the air conditioning. But I am getting use to it now.

October 2007, I went to the first Arizona "Bald Girls Do Lunch" here which really helped me come to peace with what I need to feel for me and about me...I had to feel comfortable with me first and love me first for the natural beauty that GOD has made me!

If you show others that you don't have a problem with being bald when you want to be bald...and that we do have options and choices to wear something on our heads if we want to...we are the captains of our ships and we should spread the awareness of living with Alopecia everyday...So since the BGDL Luncheon, I have not worn a wig anywhere... I have embraced my beautiful baldness!

Attending my first "Bald Girls Do Lunch" function in Arizona...

I just want to share an experience I had when attending a luncheon 6 months ago...I got a chance to meet 9 other beautiful women who shared the same condition I have...Alopecia. Finally I got a chance to see someone of my likeness, some women came to the function without wigs and others had wigs on, but we still shared our stories and felt a sisterhood in our likeness. I left that luncheon with the understanding of knowing: We do have options and choices of what we want to wear on our heads, b… Continue

What happen...the first time I went to work BALD!

This is a story I had in a blog back in October of 2007, you will see as you read on I get pretty upset... Well, I had been working up to this point of reviling my Baldness at work for about a month on my job. Trying to prepare folks on my job for the drastic change. I posted information about the "Bald Girls Do Lunch" in the company break room's bulletin board as well as showing the local newspaper articles that were going around about the luncheon that showed a picture of me in my Baldness.… Continue

Yvonne: Your comments mean the world to me, they really do. I am looking forward to our next meeting and getting to know all the people much better. I also very much appreciate offers of help when I'm at a low point (there have been many) - you are all the best.

thank you so much yvonne! that really means a lot to hear that other people appreciate that picture. it spoke so loudly for how i was feeling at the time & i think it also speaks for how people with alopecia feel when your hair is falling out. i'll have to work on doing some more cool ones. thanks for the compliment! =)

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE COMMENT, I HAVE LEARNED IN MY SHORT LIFE THAT THERE ARE A LOT MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT THAN HAIR, LIKE MY HEALTH, I JUST TO THANK GOD THANK I AM ALIVE AND WELL, AND NOT STUCK IN THE BED LIKE SOME PEOPLE THAT LOOKS LIKES US THAT IS BATTLING DISEASE LIKE CANCER, I HAVE LEARNED TO JUST DEAL WITH IT, OF COURSE IT GETS HARD SOMETIME IN SCHOOL, BUT I AM JUST GRATEFUL
