Coins and Spots

I was just finding some humor in the fact that people describe their bald spots in coin sizes. That's kind of funny right? I mean, as funny as it can be.. dimes, pennies, nicles and quarters..

I need a friend

I don't know anyone else who has alopecia. I have dealt with alopecia outbreaks since I was about 5 years old and it has always been something that I have silently struggled with. I'm 23 years old now, and am currently dealing with it yet again. I really need someone who can understand what I'm going thru, just to talk to. I guess this is the perfect place to find that... I hope.

I'm trying to think of when I "resigned" myself. I think it was after the last painful round of shots in the scalp, when I decided I would rather be bald in a cute wig than go through being a guinea pig for painful shots that didn't work or staining creams on my pillow and pajamas. Once I gained my freedom from all that, and learned from a friend selling make-up (home party situation) and the ladies at the cosmetic counter (fancy stores...they do make-overs for FREE!) how to do my eyebrows, I felt much better. Women have been wearing make-up since ancient Egyptian times, so why not me? And my mom's generation from the '40s and '50s did eyebrows, even with hair...so why not me? I consider eyebrows and wig just part of getting dressed for work now. I think maybe also, having dated and having already been married and having kids, that big mystery of "will anyone want me?" is a moot point. Is any of the fear or depression out there among the single AA, AT or AU gals connected to The Question About Men more than The Disease Itself? I wonder. I know I didn't believe I would EVER be loved or get married until I was 18, when a guy I liked told me it didn't matter about the AA. Wow! I cried and cried in happiness. Imagine going 8 years, all through puberty and teen years, never believing. I wish I could talk to Little Me across space and time to soothe myself as I was back then! If anything I just wrote hits home, think about it. Be gentle with yourself...be your own best friend now, so when you, too, are 55 you can look back on some peaceful and fun times. Just remember...people, and especially men, are drawn to smiles and confidence! I used to say to myself, after that memorable day, "I may not be perfect, but I'm perfectly me."

Hey! I don't have any days of bitterly railing anymore. Life is good! You will get to that place too, I promise. No, it's not Denver, it's Portland from my deck. Or from my deck at the beach house at Cannon Beach!

Hi Danielle,
If you need a friend, you can count on me. I've had alopecia for about 30 years -- been through it all! Let me know how you are doing today.
