- My name is Cheryl Carvery. I have been living with alopecia since 1991. Throughout the years, I have had alopecia areata and alopecia totalis. My life is not over, so there is still time for alopecia universalis. ;) I have had many ups and down and find that I have come out on the other side standing tall.
It has always been just a given for me to reach out to others with alopecia. I just did it naturally. I became involved in our local support group in Montreal, participated in the national conferences, and became president of the Quebec Alopecia Areata Foundation.
A few months ago someone asked me what I am going to do when I move to the USA. My initial thought was attend or start a support group in Michigan. This all led to starting Alopecia World with my fiancé, richard jones (rj).
rj and I created Alopecia World to meet the online support needs of alopecians. Here we share and encourage each other through our struggles and celebrate our victories, big and small.
On a personal note, I like to blend femininity and strength. A woman can be strong and physically capable as well as soft and feminine. For a long time I thought I "had" to be one or the other, and I had a hard time finding my place. Blending both is very gratifying, indeed.
I also like to keep active. It does not have to be extreme. It can be a bike ride, walking, painting a house, or cleaning the garage.
I am engaged to richard jones (rj), a VERY special man that supports me in my alopecia and is the catalyst and the great mind behind the research and design of this site.

My cure for alopecia
To me focusing our energies on getting to a place of self-acceptance is where the real cure is. I really don't want my self-confidence to be attached to my hair, my weight, my skin color... I don't want to go through my life with the false idea that only when all circumstances are totally lined up in my favo… Continue

Relationships are relationships -- regardless of our alopecia
Having a relationship with alopecia is no different from having relationship with hair.
We find someone who accepts our lack of hair, but everything else remains. We still have to battle through the process of merging 2 personalities, and me and rj are no different.

Mine is just some digital playing with a picture I took of some bleeding hearts in my friend's garden. Amazing what can come from these things if you let the intuitive stuff flow.
I'm doing very well, actually. I just recently moved into my own place, and will be starting school on Monday, so it's kind of a busy/new time in my life! It's very exciting though, and I'm loving it. I'm a lot happier with myself because of my advancements of conquering alopecia. =)
