Six years ago, I was diagnosed with Alopecia Universalis. Being faced with a sudden and unexpected appearance change is an emotional adjustment. We live in an appearance driven culture where baldness produces stares and hurtful comments. People react differently to you. My initial adjustment to being bald was a rocky road. I was a very active and involved person. I didn't understand the disease and could not find support in my area. I retreated to the safety of my home and dropped out of everything for quite some time. Well meaning friends tried to be supportive however comments such as "it's only your hair" would only further my depression. Slowly I began to accept the "new me" and tried to find a solution to my hairless head. Initially, I tried wigs however wigs did not suit my life style. I tried to find a fashionable alternative (scarves) and was disappointed by the lack of fun and fashionable scarves. I came to realize that the head scarf market for the hairless was lagging way behind the fashion industry. I've always been involved in fashion, so I began to design my own suitable solution - the birth of the BeauBeau: "Beautiful Scarves for Beautiful Heads". Initially, I didn't know if anyone else would find my scarves as comfortable and fun to wear as I did - however it didn't take long for others to feel the same way. I've been designing scarves for 2 years and it has been the most rewarding event in my life. I am in contact with hundreds of "hairless" women and girls who share with me the difference I have made in their lives. Alopecia handed me the opportunity to help other women and girls cope with their hair loss in a dignified and stylish manner. There is no substitute in life for the feeling that you have made a difference in the life of someone else! Thank you Alopecia!
Hi Susan, It was also nice to have met you. Thank you so much for the beautiful scarfs. Yes I'm enjoying them. Your right this can be traumatic, but I know with time I will overcome this and be more confident with my new appearance.
I can't believe I missed you at the conference. I am so sorry! Unfortunately we got there late on Thursday and missed most of the opening reception and had to leave at 5:30 AM on Sunday so missed the closing. So most of the big gathering we missed. I felt like I just flew through the hotel... Was your Jack there with you?
Darn - I wish I had met you at the conference. I was "chained" to the exhibit area most of the time! I did get to meet so many wonderful people - I just loved meeting so many faithful "beaubeau" wearers! It was great. I think the site is great and love the interaction with fellow Alopecians. Maybe - next year in Houston!!!
Hi, Susan. I hope that you're treating life well and reaping every wonderful benefit of doing so. Cheryl and I attended this year's NAAF conference with the intent to meet and spend some time with members of Alopecia World. Amazingly, we didn't see you there or somehow overlooked your exhibit. Please charge the oversight to our heads and certainly not to our hearts. We appreciate your positive presence in Alopecia World and sponsorship of the site. I just hope that the time and energy you expend here is well-worth it. :-) Wishing you great joy and continued success, rj, Co-founder

I hope to get some more people from Sweden to go with me next year.
Yes, I got a cold. A big one. Took me a week to get well.
It was my first conference. Have you been to some before?
