About Me:
My name is Laura and recently I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata. I am 21 and I am getting married September 27th, 2008. It all started slow, and then quickly progressed. After doing a lot of research before going to the doctor to get things checked out, I figured it was Alopecia but wasn't 100% certain. After many blood tests my thyroid antibody test came back positive, but my Thyroid TSH test came back normal. Being very confused about the meaning of theses tests I did some more research and thyroid antibody tests that come back positive is linked to Alopecia. I have been seeing a dermatologist which doesn't seem to be doing anything for me, prescribed topical steroids and I will also be starting injection steroids. The hair loss just get worse, and doctors say it is hard to tell if I will lose all of it, but doing treatments can slow it down. I will see how everything goes, just becomes very stressful.

Wigs

So...I was researching wigs online and I found a web site called wigs.com and it seems that they have a nice selection. I just don't understand the difference between synthetic and real hair wigs. I know I want a human hair wig so I can style and wash it like normal hair, but I don't know where to begin. If anyone has any suggestions or comments they would be really appreciated. Also, if anyone knows a good website that sells human hair wigs please let me know.

Where Should I Begin?

Just researching.... I was wondering if anyone knew anywhere that I can get a all natural hair wig where I can actually try them on. I have searched and came up with nothing. Also what are the best ones? If someone could please let me know it would mean very much to me.

Hi Laura,
There are many types of wigs. Human hair looks most natural and European hair is the finest. As far as caps, lace front wigs look most natural as it looks like it is growing out of your scalp. If you still have hair you might want to look into a regular wig. Vacuum pieces are very nice but you do have to shave every day so it will stick to your scalp. There is also hair replacement like from the Hair Club, Apollo. You can also check with Hair Direct. Have you called Debbie? She can help you.

Another site that is fabulous is Wigsalon.com. They have the deepest discounts on wigs. You have to select one and then on the order form they show you how much you will save. That's the only place I get my synthetics. As far as human hair goes, there are sites you can get custom wigs and measure your head. I would just tell you that if you want the nicest hair, make sure it's European. The next best is Indian. Don't get Asian hair because for you it would be too coarse, and they have to bleach it out which makes it straw-like. To try them on, you may have to visit a large town close to you if you don't have any wig stores in your area. Come to Portland and I'll take you to one!

I noticed you said that you were having trouble finding a wig shop in your area, unfortunately I have the same problem where I am at, small town, not a lot of options. However, I found a web site called wigs.com and they have a huge selection, they even have wigs that best suite certain face shapes etc...it is a great site and they have your new wig to you in a week. Take care and have a great day!

Hi Laura,
If you have a wig shop in your town or nearest city, they may carry human hair wigs you can try on. European hair has to be fitted and ordered, but Indian hair is pretty good and you can find these at wig shops with adjustable caps.
I've had au for about 30 years -- just wanted to say hello and see how you are doing!
