I am 28 and have been suffering with Alopecia Areata since the age of 20. I was diagnosed in March of 2000-my junior year of college. The doctor wrote me a perscription for Prednisone and since then, I believe that Prednisone should only be used in severe cases for auto immune illnesses where the white count is very low-not Alopecia.
Since being diagnosed, I have received kenalog injections in the spots every six weeks to three months. I have taken up to four months off the injections, and my AA spots became very large. My AA has gone away twice. Once after a pilgrimage to Mexico City to see Our Lady of Guadalupe, it went away for about four months. The AA returned around the time my Grandmother had a stroke. It also went away when I became pregnant. I lost the pregnancy, and the alopecia came right back.
I have a sister who developed AA at age 36 in December of 2007. She still has 2 small spots, and also receives the kenalog injections. We also have a male second cousin on my father's side who developed Alopecia Areata then Alopecia Totalis at the age of 19. All three of us participated in the MD Anderson study and hope that our family can help find a cure. My sister and I have a brother too who has no signs of AA. My sister has three girls and my brother has a boy and a girl, none of whom have AA.
I have an incredible husband who adores me. He makes AA so much more bearable. We are both big fans of Catholicism, and hope the Lord will send us children soon. We have been doing fertility treatments since April of 2008 but do not know how much longer we will continue.
Hi you, thanks for all the support it is so nice to have such a great group of people to meet and chat with on our daily advnenture of AA.
Yes I have the ophiasis pattern not oto mention other little spots that like to show up. I started the injections right after the birth of my son. The doctor stressed that the kind of AA I have is very hard to treat in that it usually will not get better in most of the time turn into AT or AU. At this point in time I have only a few little spots. Yes I had total regrowth. But I can tell that something is happening again as I see a lot of hair shedding from the same spot it fell out of to start.
I was getting acupuncture also for stress and depression from all of this it really helped a lot. I was under so much stress during my pregnancy and I think that is why it started then becasue it never happened with my other pregnancys. oh well! Do you happen to know the side affects of the injections?
It's great to meet you. How are the injections working for you? I've been getting them for a year they were working great and now they seem not to be now. I'm losing more hair now and it's on top of my head and now that I have short hair I can't hide it. What other treatment have you tried. I'm almost to the point of letting god take over and not getting anymore shots.
thanks for the response. I do agree that pred makes me a bit cranky but i have read up on some clinical trials whereby people (in some cases 70% of a group) have significant regrowth. Also reading forums some people have also had total regrowth. So i have opted for a low dose pulse.
I am at the stage where my alopecia has become quite bad so i want to try all avenues before i simply give up and accept it.
Prednisolone is a steroid and in low dosage no different to getting a shot in the head or elsewhere. That shot although localised still enters your blood stream.
I dont actually agree with taking steroids at all but its worth a shot. If this doesnt work ill go the natural path....
Fingers crossed hey..... from your pics your hair looks really lovely ... i hope it stays that way for you.
hEY!!! I noticed you do not live to far from Nashville and I just wanted to stop by and tell you I am hosting a Links for Locks tournament here in the Nashville Area Friday Sept 19th and would love if you could make it!!! There are some people coming up from GA and down from KY !!! Would be awesome if you could come. It starts at 1:30 in the afternoon. Let me know if you would like some info. I am in need of golfers and maybe a few more sponsors ... if you have any connections or know of anyone who would like to play please let me know :) thanks
