Will my baby have alopecia?

Hi everyone,

I am a 26 year old danish woman, who was diagnosed (or rather self-diagnosed - the danish medical system is in many cases pretty unaware of our condition) Alopecia Totalis in 2003. Since then my eyelashes have returned and most od my eyebrows as well. We are expecting our first child in September.

I know all there is to know about alopecia (pretty much) but I have been unable to find any statistics or such that can tell my what the percentage is for woman with alopecia passing the condition to their children.

My boyfriend doesn't have alopecia and none in either his or my family has alopecia.

Of course, what will be will be, and there are certainly worse things that could happen - still i wonder if there exist some sort study of this topic - or what is your experience??

Congrats on the regrowth you are experiencing! I've had AA since I was a child and now have four lovely children... all of them with thick heads of hair!! I'm also the only person in my family history that has had AA/AT/AU, so for me at least, the genetic side just doesn't explain why my body hates my hair... ;)

Let's see...my father was a Hepititus carrier, there's thin hair in females on his side, and on my maternal side there is asthma. I have Alopecia, but my sons (over 20) and grandson do not...and they have had various immunizations, including the HepB series for school. I am the only "lucky" one to get Alopecia, going back at least to the 1880s. However, I had impetigo and eczema in my youth...before the Alopecia. Who knows if any of these link up to AA?

Hi

I do think there is a genetic link with all autoimmune conditions (Asthma, eczema, Lupus, Thyroid disease, diabetes, alopecia etc). If cousins, brothers, mothers, fathers sisters have any sort of immune condition it seems to me that it carries on through that family. Your mother may have had hayfever your father psoriasis and then you the child may have AA. AA sits on a raft of conditions and you just happen to be lucky or unlucky as to how many you get or which ones effect you if any. Everybody I have asked the same scenario keeps popping up. I am not a doctor so take this as it is meant - just my observation.
