Cindie, good for you. I think we all have to make the decisions for ourselves and hope it is the right one.

Thannks, Lisa, and thanks Ktownnana. It's taken me many, many years to come to the conclusion that is the best approach for me.

Cindie, you can order a headblade online: <a href="http://www.headblade.com" target="_blank">www.headblade.com</a> They also list stores and which headblade products they stock.

I do believe that eventually the stigma will fade....look at Miss Delaware! What a brave, brave, beautiful young lady! If a beauty queen can have alopecia, so can anyone!<br />
<br />
The problem, as I see it (and I am an expert by no means), is that there will always be people who are open to education and learning about the causes of alopecia, and there will always be a group of people who have been taught misinformation and nonsense, and they will always cling to outdated information.<br />

When I run into people who don't want to accept current information on any number of subjects and insist in wallowing in ignorance "because that is the way I was raised", I say, "goodbye, Godspeed", and I "keep it moving."<br />

That's sad that you couldn't get a barber to shave your head. Will we ever get over the stigma of alopecia if just about everyone feels like this? Probably not in my lifetime.

I shave my own head...first with the clippers, then with a triple blade razor. But I am going to look into purchasing the HeadBlade (we don't have a Walgren's locally, but other stores may carry it).<br />
<br />
I once asked a barber to shave my head (and not for free, either), but he refused on the grounds that "hair was saced to black men and they hated bald women." So I asked a few other barbers -- all African-American, and they said they "didn't feel right" doing it.<br />
<br />
So I learned how to do it myself!

I shave my head myself. It takes some practice but once you are used to it, it is easy. I suggest getting the HeadBlade from Walgreen's. It was developed for men who shave their head. I find it very easy to use and it gives a good shave. I shave mine every other day. I've never cut myself. I use men's sensitive shave gel because I have found it is much better than women's sensitive gel. I use a headblade plus headslick shaving gel, in the shower, usually by myself. It's quick & nicks are rare. My local drugstore usually has it. I rinse the razor several times, and change blades pretty often, and my skin doesn't get irritated.
