Thinning out a wig, lessening the shine and what type of mesh is best

I went to my first wig consultation last weekend and have a few follow up questions I need some advice on:
1) they seemed to be sooooo much hair, I guess because I am just not used to having so much hair on my head. Can a synthetic wig be thinned out so that it looks a little more natural?
2) I noticed that some of the wigs I tried on were a little too shiny. I saw on a website that you can either use baby shower or wash it in fabric softener and water to get rid of some of the shine..anyone do that or have another method? I would prefer not to ruin it when I am trying to remove some of the shine if the one I get is extra shiny.
3) what is the best type of mesh to get? I tried on one wig which I think was a manufactured mesh and there was just too much mesh in there and it kind of bulked up, where as the other meshes tended to fit a little better. Any advice?
4) what is your preference or opinion..human hair or synthetic? I am leaning towards the synthetic vs. the human hair, but interested in other people's opinions.

I am sure that I will come up with other questions before my next consultation, unfortunately is in 3 weeks, but had to get a saturday appt so my mom and aunt can go with me.

pretty much any wig can be thinned but I personally wouldn't do it myself. it can end up being pretty damaging. I've heard of people thinning the bottom layers with a razor.. yikes! I couldn't ever put a razor to my wig.

I have put baby powder on my wig and while it does reduce the shine, it also produces some kind of white cast on the hair which looks quite odd and it often collects at the hairline (netting). a baby powder white hairline doesn't look too natural. lol! so I personally just wear my wig out a few times to unimportant events and I find the shine goes down after 2/3 wears (:

I dont know much about meshes. hmm..

I personally prefer human hair wigs. I find that synthetic wigs don't last long at all for me and I very much love to style my hair (curl, straighten, wave) so synthetic doesn't work for me.

hope I was of some help. lol. good luck!
