Hi all, Been awhile since I posted, but finally accepted having no hair only took a year....yeah go me, but now I am looking for a new Job as my Job is being made redundant and I have an interview on Monday but don't know how to address the Alopecia thing my current work place was accepting but the idea of having to make new employers understand is hard, Just wondering does anyone have a booklet or a letter they have attached to there resume's or given out that explains it, something that states having no hair does not make me incapable of working....
Thanks in advance...

I wait until I get hired, then explain that, when teaching, I may need some support if students tease me. But I wait until I am solidly into the job the first few days. Then, they would look like they were discriminating if they un-hired me!

Thanks for the responses, i prefer beanies, I think its just as I have no eyelashes or eyebrows so wearing a wig does not seem to suit me.

and thats the point that I want to make at the interview... at the end of the day I think I will present myself the best I am and deal with the outcome later...

My thoughts as I will probably be in this same situation next year.

1. Walk in with confidence; if you view your Alopecia as a disease and believe it will hold you back then it will show and it will hold you back.

2. Do not bring it up unless the employer does. Legally, the employer should not bring it up unless hair is a qualification for the job. If the employer does bring it up, answer from a professional viewpoint, answer with confidence, then move on.

3. Again, did I mention walk in with your head up high with confidence?

4. I do not wear wigs or scarfs. An occasional hat if my head gets cold and during the winter. I will definitely be job searching with natural look of no hair.

5. Be who you are! Do what makes you feel comfortable. Here, you will get opinions. In the end it is your decision. If you do not get the job, do not blame 'no hair' as the reason. This will only bring you down for your next interview.

If you walk in with a wig, get the job then walk in bald, what message are you sending?

In the end, you have to feel positive about your decision. I wish you the best in your interview and job search!

I accepted interview went in it was obvious I was bald I had a Fedora on and I spoke with both Managers about Alopecia they really liked Me and I got the job the only requirement they had was that the colors of fedora I would wear would be basic colors and that was that.I also was nervous and was sure I would never find a job because the Alopecia thing, I think it depends on if you go in and it just is part of who you are.

It is a big decision for you. Personally i wouldn't wear the beanie as i don't think that would set the right impression as soon as you walk in. if you will not normally be wearing wigs then i guess you interview bald. is that an option? i know it is really hard but i think that they need to see and hear you being honest from the start. i would hope that any employed would see qualities of self confidence, bravery and individuality if they interviewed soweone who had the guts to walk in bald. if i For an interview anytime soon again i am sure all the same thoughts will rise with me - go bald or wear a wig - it is tough and i wish you all the best in deciding what to do :-)

This may be the perfect opportunity for you to test your confidence level being bald. I started a new job last year and had to make the decision of going bald my first day or go back to wearing a wig. My husband told me to be confident and go without my wig. I took his advice and it was fine. I did get questions about my hair but mostly compliments. But it is a very personal decision that you have to make. I wish you well on your job interview and support you whatever choice you make.

Thank you all well today is the big day so I have decided to go wearing a wig, as it the initial interview, and see how I go from there, if I'm comfortable enough I'll bring it up because at the end of the day, I will go to work wearing a beanie but there are 3 interviews for this role and the first one I will show my skills, without the "SHOCK" factor if I make the second I will address Alopecia there cause I don't want to lie Alopecia is a part of me and I'm not prepared to live wearing a wig everyday to put up a front of what a "normal" person does at the end I am proud to be one of the many Alopecians its something I have and understand and I think the rest of the world need us to accept this.. but thanks again to all. love the comments

I personally would go to the interview the same way that I lead my everyday life and the way that I would be going to that particular workplace daily. Meaning I don't think I would feel comfortable wearing a wig to the interview and then coming in as something different. So, I personally would go without a headpiece or covering and would also take the opportunity to introduce alopecia in a positive light.

There is an alopecia fact sheet in PDF format on NIAMS website:

Let us know how the interview went!
