I just got back from spending some time in my home town with my family. I hadn't seen some of them in about 8 months, including my little 4 year old cousin. She is so cute. On Christmas morning I helped her put together one of her big gifts. She found this little bow and asked me to put it in my hair. I have a buzz cut and I was wearing a scarf on my head at the time. I asked if I could attach it to my scarf and she said "no, take that off". I said "I don't have any hair". She looked at me like a deer in headlights. I lifted up the scarf a little to show her my buzz cut. She said "did you cut your hair". I said "yes, because I have a condition". She asked why and I said "I don' know why". Its funny because over the years, I have asked why so many times. After that she brought me into the guest bedroom where I was staying to get something and she saw my wigs hanging upside down. She touched one of them and said "whose is this?". I said it was mine. She asked "is it real or fake". Someone interrupted us so I didn't tell her either one. That night, we went to our grandparent's house to eat and I had put on a wig. All night she kept lifting up my wig's bangs and sides. She would say "is it fake? oh no, it is real". I was so worried she was going to pull the wig off on accident but she never pulled that hard. I thought it was so cute that she kept trying to figure it out if it was real or fake. She reminded me that it is no big deal that I have no hair or that I wear a wig. I also learned to never let a 4 year old to paint cheap nail polish on top of already painted nails. It took me forever to get all of the nail polish off! Lol. But I had lots of fun playing with her!

That's so cute! My kids (3yo and 4yo) actually love to play with my hair. I wear a Freedom wig now so I really don't mind too much. My daughter likes to put the clips in my hair for me. Right now, they prefer me with hair. When they've seen me without it, they say I look like their grandmother :)

I think that most people are just curious when the person with the condition is comfortable then they can ask their questions. My daughter is away at college and has discovered that most of her friends know about the alopecia but don't discuss it because they don't want to make her uncomfortable. When she brings it up they are free to ask questions. She has discovered this does not change the friendship which was a huge relief to her.

I have two nieces, one is a year and a half and the other almost three and a half. About a month ago I had been doing something outside so my bandanna was all sweaty when I went back into the house so I took it off to dry. My older niece saw me without it on and came over to me and very gently touched my head and asked me where my hair was. I told her I don't have any so she bent over to kiss my head and when she did, she realized her hair covered part of my head. She had to call her mom (my sister) into the room to show her mom how she was sharing her hair with me.

I also have a 4 year old cousin and I started wearing a wig two years ago. So its like she was meeting a new person. Well in the summer of this year I wore my wig in the pool for the first time. I was soo happy but, when I came out, it was soaking wet so I took it off. My cousin, was like ne-ne. I started laughing with other cousin and my aunt. I went to her and said yes, this is ne-ne. Then she hugged me and said I like this you A LOT better. So whenever I see her I never (sometimes) wear a wig. So on Christmas she gave me a gift. When I opened it, I was like woah! wow!! Thanks baby!! It was a hat! And I was a big fan of hats before I had a wig. I wore it the next time I saw her, which was yesterday!! :)

Such sweet, touching stories!! I can see the innocence and the curiousity in that little girls eyes! When I told my almost 6 year old nephew that all my hair might fall out, he thought it was so cool, and he couldn't wait to tell all of his friends at school. They are fascinated and mesmerized, and their curiousity leads to their education about things!
