Sept. 2, 2009, thanks to Christine's blog & the continuous update on Kyler's progress, we finally got in touch with Dr. Gonen via Facebook saying that we are READY to try this treatment on our son, Joaquin, who's had alopecia areata since October 2003. His staff from the Hair Institute replied to my email and later sent a questionnaire which we gladly answered attaching scalp pictures of Joaquin. Afterwhich, Dr. Gonen himself called me on my cell phone. He asked me more questions & he said that based on my answers & Joaquin's pictures, there's is a great possibility for his hair to grow back. We then discussed further his credentials and the routine involved with the treatment.
Sept. 25, 2009, we finally received the package from Israel. It contained a 3-month supply of the Hair UP solution plus a bottle of their shampoo. The cost is US$500. That same night, we started Joaquin's treatment. The family is very excited, including Joaquin himself. He keeps telling us that he wants Anakin's hair (from Star Wars). I actually forgot the fact that our son has asthma but, the shampoo smells nice and the hair up solution doesn't smell bad at all!

Although, we are all very hopeful, we also understand that there's also the possibility that his hair follicles will not react positively to the treatment. But again, it's better to try it than not to have tried it at all! We all leave it to God now....in His time.

This is the start of a tedious routine but very exciting time! If you are reading this & believe in the power of prayer, please do pray for our son, Joaquin, and we will continue to pray for everyone! God bless!

A BIGGGGG prayer will be coming for you and Joaquin! What is the regime you will have to follow? What treatments have been unsuccessful for you?

Hi Barbara -- thank you for the prayers. The daily treatment involves cleaning of the scalp/head using Dr. Gonen's shampoo before bed and then, applying the Hair UP solution. There is no need to apply it on the eyebrow section. The solution dries up quickly so no need to worry about staining the sheets. Then after waking up, you shampoo the scalp/head again.

Joaquin used 2 types of topical creams that did not work -- one was clear liquid, the other was colour white. Sorry but, I forgot the names, I think if it had worked, I would remember. We stopped after a year. And we never tried the DCP treatment considering his age.

Hope I answered your questions.

Thanks again,
Jennifer

hello yasmin. sorry for the delay in responding. i haven't been online for quite sometime.

thanks, joaquin is indeed lovely even without hair. we call him "pogi" or good looking in Filipino language.

well, it has been six mos. since we started the hair up treatment on joaquin but, unfortunately, there's no real progress on him.

after 3 mos., we did see a few very tiny white hair in maybe 2 areas on his scalp but you will have to hold his head up against the sun light to see it. we were so ecstatic & hopeful that we ordered another batch of the treatment in mid-january. another 3 mos. passed and his scalp is still the same. dr. gonen said that his hair folicles may be weak -- when i told a sick kids hospital doctor here about that comment, he said that hair folicles could never be weak. all that said, we are now just finishing the hair up supply that we have but, we think this treatment is not for him so, we may not continue with it. i know, i'm sorry for the bad news but who knows, just before we finish the supply, there may be a change on his progress. we're still hopeful & we still keep on praying.

thanks for asking & take care.

He is a beautiful little boy, hairless and all. I pray that he and you will find peace in this process. My little boy is asian and his har is very stiff and "pokey". He pines for soft flowy wavy hair of other boys he knows. I know it is not the same as having no hair, believe me, I know. But I hope and pray that peace will come to you and I do also pray for cure. God bless you and Joaquin. Jana www.adoctorandanurse.com
