Hello anyone who might read this. Well, I did it--I cut off my hair today! I now have two beautiful wigs. I will post some photos tomorrow hopefully. They will still take some getting used to--I look VERY different and I am unaccustomed to having brushable/combable hair! But so far so good. I cried a lot while it was being cut but once it was over I felt free. The wig is very nice and light. Now for shampoo/conditioner... and hats! Oh, how long it's been since I've worn a hat.

Hello,
You go girl! You took a big step. Did you get synthetic or human hair? I hope you love it. Can't wait to see photos. Oh, I love hats!

Hi Bekindtoearth! From my (few days of) experience, I would say that the haircut makes all the difference! I went to a very good stylist, and the haircut she gave me makes the wig look super natural. It's definitely not quite what I expected--I ordered it from a salon, and was surprised how curly it was when it came in--but I've only gotten compliments on it. It does not "feel" wiggy and all those fears I had (that it would feel like a hat, that it would be super obvious, that it would fly off) so far are unfounded. I am definitely having fun with it. I even like how I look with what's left of my own hair, which I did not expect (though I am not ready to go out like that, maybe I won't ever be). Nervous about the gym on Monday but otherwise what people say here is true--it's liberating.

I have almost 30 years of alopecia experience and I understand what you are going through. It is very difficult as a young african american woman to not only find the right wig, but the right texture to look and feel natural. Ruth's Beauty http://www.ruthsbeautyshop.com/ has been a lifesaver for me (I like Kiki). The full lace kinky texture, human hair has gotten me so many compliments, you can cornrow, wear it up, wear it back off your face. There are a lot of styling techniques on youtube. Even women who wear extensions and wigs can't tell it's not mine. It's attached so it can be touched and manipulated. Great for working out and swimming.

Wow, had never heard of Ruth's Beauty Shop. Thanks so much! I went to a salon, had a black stylist and the hair is nice, but I'm not sure I can afford going to her for the long term. She was very supportive to me for this transition so I might buy one more piece from her and then try to find a cheaper solution. These look great, I appreciate it!

Congratulations Claudia for taking this huge step. Seriously. The sooner you tackle it head on the better. You can't control what alopecia does to you right now. But you can control how you present it to the rest of the world. Your confidence will be the loudest statement you'll ever make. it does take some getting used to but consider it a new phase in your life and put your best foot forward. Good luck!

Thank you for posting and sharing all those details - it helps others (like me) to alleviate some of the fears of the unknown that lies ahead. I found it particularly great to read that it doesn't feel "wiggy" and that you unexpectedly like your own (bio) haircut. I hope you continue to feel happy and comfortable with your new styles, Claudia.
