I stand up straight and proud

I feel elegant and unique

I'm cool when other people are hot

I rock my large collection of earrings

I sometimes wear jewels or decorations on my head

I feel special

I feel ME

If you haven't tried going OUT in public bald and would like to, an opportunity is coming up soon. 2012's International Alopecia Day is Saturday, August 4! Join the International Alopecia Day Group here on AW. Plan a large or small event wherever you live, or just try going someplace bald for the first time. Take a photo to send me and be part of the 2012 slide show on YouTube. Check out previous years' videos on AW or YouTube.

Celebrate! More ideas and details will appear soon on the IAD Group page.

As you can see from the photos on earlier years, we've had IAD participants wearing wigs - )and even some friends and family with hair!) The purpose of the Day is to raise awareness about AA, and also celebrate who we are and recognize that we're a worldwide community. It's a good day to try going out bald for the first time, but it doesn't have to be just that. (;-)

Wonderful! My initial idea in 2009 when this annual "Day" was first created was that it would be ONE DAY when women who hadn't quite gotten to the point of going OUT in public bald would give it a try. The event has evolved into a International day for all people with alopecia to raise awareness and celebrate US! I'm happy that it can still inspire!

Love this post! I have learned to *love* just going with my head uncovered in public. Especially since it's getting hotter, I just feel more free this way. I, too, have a great collection of earrings, and love feeling like an individual when I'm out and about. Sure, I get funny looks (especially from kids) sometimes, but I've just made a decision to be okay with ME. :)

Good for you, Jaclyn! Doesn't it feel good to just not care?

Hi All - I have not worn a wig since April. Once it got warm enough to not need a wig, hat, or scarf I lost them. I have been everywhere bald from a major league baseball game to the grocery store. And I fly bald as well...too worried about messing up wigs on 4 hour+ flights. :) I used to only want to go out bald when I was with my husband (who has been shaving his head since well before my hair fell out) but I'm now brave enough to go everywhere on my own. Yes, people stare. And yes it is kids that stare the longest. I will still wear a wig to formal family functions (not quite yet ready to take attention away from a bride on her wedding day) but in my everyday life I just prefer to be bald. I am always fussing with scarves or worried that a wig will fall off and I find that more embarrassing that just being bald and myself. I still have rough days from time to time, don't get me wrong, but overall I think losing my hair made me a stronger person. I'll gladly go bald on August 4th. :)

Good for you! I totally respect women who prefer to wear wigs, but this is the way for me.

Please send me a photo of YOU on August 4! I just posted about what we're doing in San Diego - let's see how many different cities and countries we can get participation from this year.
