Ella The Enchanted Princess Who Are You? book helps Maci Huffstetler Through Losing Her Hair

Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that affects hair growth on the scalp and entire body which results in minor or complete hair loss with slim chances of regrowth, for which there is no cure. Just some Words (poem)

JUST SOME WORDS

Don't wanna be the victim,

Don't wanna play the part,

My false sense of self is tearing me apart.

I'm done telling myself lies

I'm done hearing myself cry,

The way i lived my past wont be the way that I die.

I didn't waste those years for nothing,

I didn't give'em away for free,

the things I've hated about myself,

they aren't really me.

I guess I did it to see how bad it hurt,

I guess I lit it to see how bad it…

An alopecian looking for work - An update

It's been 3 years and 6 months. Unemployment came and went. I had to file for bankruptcy, no money in means no money to go out; no choice in the matter. Difficult to maintain a home with one income where it needs two. I had to give my car back. I managed. I survived because I'm married and my husband works. We cut back as far as possible, even moved into a lesser rent apartment. We were lucky the complex we live in worked with us. While my husband was good with everything we had our moments.…

Anniversary-Almost one whole year without hair!

Its February 2012. At the end of February 2011 I realized after seeing a photo of myself, that my alopecia was beyond repair; not enough hair on my head to "cover" the spots as I had been doing the past 18 years. I went to my hairdresser, who was instrumental in fixing what hair I had left throughout the years to shave off what was left of my hair.

That happened on March 5th. Its almost a whole year. I've grown a great deal. I have had many realizations, some good, some horrible.…

The Bald Man and the Fly

THERE was once a bald man who sat down after work on a hot summer's day. A fly came up and kept buzzing about his bald pate, and stinging him from time to time. The man aimed a blow at his little enemy, but — whack — his palm came on his head instead. Again the fly tormented him, but this time the man was wiser and said:

"You will only injure yourself if you take notice of despicable enemies."

Cinderella moment

I had a job interview today with an employment agency. Mind you, I'd responded to an ad for a "Receptionist/Secretary Law Firm". Right up my alley. When I walked in I was shown to a desk where I was then given an insurmountable amount of paperwork to fill out. You would have thought I had bought a house. I removed my overcoat, my cap, exposing my Royal Baldness. The receptionist smiled. The others kept walking past where I was I guess to get a "sneak peak" at the tall bald headed one. No… Continue

Out in the world with my bald head

My husband and I went to Target for some household essentials. I happened to meet him over in the men's section where he was trying on pants. I saw a few caps that were very unisex looking, thought I might try them on and pick one or two up for the summer. Funky looking little caps, right up my alley. I was wearing a Buff. Of course, in order to try the cap I needed to remove my buff. I walked over to the full length mirror about 5 feet from where my husband was. I removed my buff put on cap… Continue

I think I just found my meaning

My mum hates the fact I'm bald. She's embarassed by it.

I was in Sydney for a few days with my drama class and had the best time in my scarves, not my wig. My friends dont mind talking about my alopecia and I felt - and, dare i say it, looked :P - great. Whenever we were just around in the hotel, I didn't wear anything, aound the girls at least, and everyone was fine with it.

It made me realise how much pressure I feel from my mum to wear my hair.

It's currently… Continue

It's a new day...to be continued

This is going to be a farely short blog...for now. I have to be in class in 20 minutes, but I had an epiphany as I was getting dressed this morning. People stare at me all day long, so why not give them something to look at? I typically am a 'plain Jane.' I don't really like to stand out. Instead of being stared at looking 'average' (whatever that is), I decided today that I am going to look the best I can every day. Instead of 'hey, look at that bald girl,' maybe it will go more like 'hey look… Continue

A Perfect Sunday!!!!!

Sunday was an ideal day, the weather forecast was good and so we got up early and set off for the beach in Wales. We go to a beach between Barmouth and the Clynn Peninsular so it’s about a two and a half hour drive away from Warrington. We break the journey up with a coffee stop at Bala which is always a good place to break the journey. We always use the same coffee shop as the coffee is excellent and the coffee shop itself is an interesting place to visit. It is an old chapel converted into a… Continue

Follow Up with Dr. Lovely Mc Needles

I saw my lovely Dermatologist today and she shot up my eyebrows with the Kenalog injections. She said to pick an area on each brow and add the Lumigan to see if it helps in filling out the area between appointents- "it can't hurt" -as the Lumigan is really a serendipitous (is that a word?) use of the Lumigan product anyway..

So lots of "ouchies" today- I must say I would rather be hammer fisted once in the groin as a consolation to the multiple ouchies, but I can't be a wuss! If it… Continue

Which presidential candidate should alopecians vote for?

Which of the U.S. presidential candidates, including so-called 3rd-party candidates, do you believe would do the most to improve the lives of alopecians? Of course, your answer to this question will depend on how you view the candidates' proposed health care policies. But perhaps there ought to be some consideration of the candidates' overall economic visions as well.

In any event, do any of the candidates speak to or for you as an alopecian? Based on what you've learned…

TWO DAYS AGO

In the store (keep in mind I'm currently in a town of 12,000 people) I turned down an aisle (the one with asian/mexican foods) and came straight across another woman with alopecia (which I have never done in person before not even living in a city with millions). She was with her childern and (unlike me at that time in the morning) absolutely STUNNING! So what happened you're probably wondering by now...

Nothing ... I grabbed my nori and rice vinegar and continued on my… Continue
