It's reassuring to know that you're not alone. However, it's important to remember that these celebrities are just people, like you and me. They…

I May Not Love How I Look... But

What if you do not consider yourself as one of the young, seemingly beautiful with or without hair type.

Where do you go from there?

How do still develop a sense of self even if you do not believe that you are beautiful?

A video that really bought that home for me is the one below from one of our members, Rachel Goode entitled:  “I may not love how I…

Winning the Emotional Game of Alopecia

Are You Stuck In A Metaphorical Tug Of War?

My mind has been on alopecia and what is the best way for us to live life to the fullest while living with the condition?

I am convinced that this is more an emotional battle than a physical one.

Our struggles seem to have more to do with acceptance, will I find a mate? Will kids at school laugh at me?  How do I tell my new date?  Will my spouse still be attracted to me?

My thought is, if it was just physical then “slapping on” a new wig would…

"I didn’t know it was OK not to completely fit in."

I came across this article on Refinery29.com and I am sure many with alopecia or children with alopecia will find it encouraging.

"Model Jeyza Gary has a rare, inherited condition that causes her skin to shed every two weeks. Two years ago, she decided to pursue a modeling career while completing her bachelor's degree in special education.…

Idek

i feel really alone, isolated & left out.

my almost 5 year relationship hurts me because I am always to hurt.

its so hard to let someone love you when you don't love yourself.

i don't know what hurts more.

losing someone you love because of this

or

loving someone who let you lose yourself.

Started Therapy

I've been seeing a psychiatrist for the past few weeks because I felt like I just had too. My anxiety picked up sometime last month, it became a physical thing to me & it's not always about my alopecia (so I think). Lately I've been getting anxious in my dreams, hearing my troubled thoughts as I sleep so when I wake up I'm still anxious and being anxious is all I could think about.

I understand its an internal thing, my subconsious, my stresses and worries, dreams of suicide,…

Just some Words (poem)

JUST SOME WORDS

Don't wanna be the victim,

Don't wanna play the part,

My false sense of self is tearing me apart.

I'm done telling myself lies

I'm done hearing myself cry,

The way i lived my past wont be the way that I die.

I didn't waste those years for nothing,

I didn't give'em away for free,

the things I've hated about myself,

they aren't really me.

I guess I did it to see how bad it hurt,

I guess I lit it to see how bad it…

My alopecia has prepared me for this

As my 50th birthday approached, I occasionally thought about the fact that much was about to change for me. I struggled with the thoughts of impending possibilities such as weight gain, wrinkles, aches and pains, and the gradual waning of my physical abilities. But I also thought about my journey with alopecia over the past 24 years.

With alopecia the questions were…

'Looking at my sister, I saw my loss'

Mailonline.com, had an interesting article about twin, in which one had alopecia and the other did not. Below is an excerpt:

“As girls, they insisted on matching outfits, right down to the ribbons in their blonde pigtails. And as teenagers, identical twins Gwennan and Elin Thomas were inseparable, even going to the same university.

‘We were, and are, best…

Sometimes I forget I have alopecia

I don’t know if it is just me, or if there is a real shift happening in the world. I just know I have not blogged lately because I really have a difficult time thinking of something to blog about.

Few things in my everyday life remind me that I have alopecia areata. I can’t remember the last time that someone asked me why I am bald. I seriously cannot think of one instance in 2012. In fact, these days I find myself looking for opportunities to share.

My husband saw a woman with…

Where I am today is where many of you will be tomorrow

Occasionally I receive an email from someone saying that they wished they had my strength to handle alopecia -- as if I woke up one day without my hair and was immediately ok with it. As most members here would attest, that is hardly ever the case. Where I am today is probably where many of you will be tomorrow.

I wrote the following in response to one such email and thought that other members that are new to alopecia or struggling may benefit from it too:

You would be…

Speaking to students about alopecia

I am asking any of you who have decided to give speeches to schools or classes...what questions usually come up? What information do you include in your presentations? I am thinking of doing this, as an alopecian since 1963 and as a teacher now...I think I can help.
