The bright side

Earlier today I was on Tumblr, looking for nothing in particular, and I ran into a quote. A quote that couldn't stop making me laugh! Usually when I read something on alopecia or hair loss, my first reaction isn't to laugh, but to frown. Anyway, the quote was: "I'm too sexy for my hair, that's why it isn't there"

Isn't that such a positive way of thinking? I want that quote on a shirt. I googled it, and I think it's supposed to be for older men who are experiencing hair loss. But I'm…

Alopecia World makes top of the list of alopecia resources!

According to the Josephfleischer.com Blog:

"Dealing with alopecia can be an isolating experience, even when you have a strong support system of family and friends around. It’s hard for people to commiserate when they aren’t sharing the same types of personal experiences that you are.

Luckily, we live in an age where information, advice and…

Treatment

So I've had a conversation, and was asked why I don't take any treatment. And to be honest, I never really thought of having treatment of any kind. To put it simple, I just don't think it's necessary. I mean, I've had alopecia for so long, without any signs of it ever going away. Maybe I just don't want to get my hopes up to have it knocked down when the treatment doesn't work. I don't know. I'm happy where I am right now. Happy with how I'm dealing with it. And by taking treatment, it makes…

My friends

So my best friend Maria recently learned that I wore a hairpiece. Of course she already knew I had alopecia but she didn't know to what extent. Anyway, I told her and my other friend Yadira. We were at a park and it seemed like a good moment. Maria even felt the underside of my hairpiece to make sure, since she thought I was lying. They both took it extremely well to my surprise. They didn't ask too many questions but they didn't seem uncomfortable to ask simple ones. Like when I first got…

Wig success! And then a huge FAIL... Back to the hat

So I finally made the decision to get a wig. After a year and a half of alopecia areata out breaks, resulting in a patch that looks as though it might never regrow. I decided to invest in a nice wig thanks to the help of my grandma and boyfriend. It was a big decision:

1. During the summer it is really hot in DC and I did not want…

So...my hair has started to grow back after 16+ years with no hair growth

I am 42 years old. Since last October I have been gluten free. I have decided to also try to go organic and no fast foods, no artificial this or that (for the most part). I have also decided to make a choice to just eat healthy. As a side effect or perhaps result of my efforts and food choices...my hair has started to grow everywhere. Its been a month since i had also started the Probiotics in my diet. I noticed fine little hairs all over my head and in my eyebrows, about 1/8" long. My…

Lustrous Hair herbal supplement from Sprouts

Has anyone tried this? I am curious and normally don't buy supplements geared towards such things, but most of the ingredients were Chinese, and it seemed to be full of roots and things that looked legit on Web MD. It was also only $15.99, which while not cheap is not expensive either and seemed worth a shot. I just began a gluten free diet ten days ago and am taking methylsulfylmethane and glucosamine with condroitin currently. While nothing is a miracle cure, it can still turn out to be a… Continue

Steroid foam

So I officially have AA and my dr put me on steroid foam to help with the itching. Problem is, with the texture of my hair it's hard to get in my scalp so I think I'm going to go to Great Clips and get it cut super short. It doesn't matter how it really looks anyway because I have to wear a hat because this stuff makes my hair look gross anyway. But after months and months, I finally have a diagnosis and I feel so relieved. Hallelujah!

Anyone had success with ciclosporin?

Hi, I've been diagnosed with alopecia areata diffuse - I used to have long thick hair about 4 years ago but it's all been shedding. Now it gets to about 4 inches long then falls out. I don't have any bald patches as it comes out all over, but it seems to be getting thinner and thinner. My consultant said it was the autoimmune disorder attacking my hair follicles. He prescribed me ciclosporin but says that he is doubtful that it would work - but this was my only real option. Has anyone else had… Continue

(Un)Supportive hubby at it again

I have my Dr appt and hubby says steroid cream may help too, and I said then I'm cutting off all of my hair (so I can see all of the spots. He proceeds to say I will look "stupid." Well he's a dork and there's no way I can get lotion through my hair now. Maybe a really short cut and slowly go shorter. He does need a lesson in empathy though.

Clipper recommendations?

Tomorrow is the big day. I'd love to hear thoughts on hair clippers. I don't want to spend a TON but is like a good reliable one. Thanks guys! Xoxo

How long?

I'm wondering... how long does it take to go from Areata to Universalis?
The bald spots on my head keep growing and now I've discovered small ones under my armpits and on my eyebrows. It also feels like my eyelashes are thinning out.
Any experiences/stories you want to share? Isn't it a bit unusual to skip the Totalis?

Greetz from Germany!

Full circle

Two years ago, March, 2011 to be exact, I incurred my first bald spot. 5 months later I was completely bald. I had never heard of Alopecia…now Alopecia was controlling my emotions, actions and my entire life. I did not want to venture out in public with my condition and taking pictures was a no-no. And when I did leave my home, I did so in complete fear of people staring at me and whispering under their breath about me. I tried to smile but I didn’t mean it… I was too heartbroken. I was…

Bye bye eyebrow...

My eyebrow is half gone. Now I'm really curious to see what the doc has to say tomorrow. Anyone know where I can learn to draw on eyebrows well? :)

Perceptions and empowerment

Last Saturday (August 3) was International Alopecia Day. A day created a few years ago to bring more awareness to the world and also to bring a supportive and unifying voice to all those affected by alopecia.

This year I decided to share my voice to this cause by spending the day at a local botanical garden. Enjoying a beautiful summer day and surprisingly bug free. For International Alopecia Day, a day of feeling empowered and confident I felt none of it. In the nearly 3 years since…

What to do... What to do...

So now I'm facing my first Dr appt where I know they're going to say "Alopecia" so right now I'm weighing my options. Mu hair, as is, is utterly useless, and as pro-bald as I am, I'm not quite sure I'm ready, so perhaps I could start with a Mia Farrow cut for a while and still use the caps/scarves... Or I could take the plunge. Most people say how liberating it is. The bald spots aren't that big but my hair is so curly and tenacious that they're hard to cover up. I thought it would be funny to… Continue
