- Hi! My name's Madelyn, Maddy for short, and I have had Alopecia Areata Universalis since I was 2 years old. Now I'm 17, so I've had it for 15 years.
I don't remember being diagnosed with Alopecia, but my family sure does. When I was diagnosed, my family was shocked. Never had they heard of this disease, but for some odd reason, they weren't worried. Automatically they knew that this would not threaten my life in any way.
I am in high school this year, and, it's a little nerve-wracking. Most everyone knows me without a wig, but recently have been wearing some fun synthetic wigs. anyways, i'm a sophomore this year, and its fun...to an extent. most accept me as a normal person, WITHOUT some disease foreign to them. some, unfortunately, mock me and complain to me about their own hair. i'm sorry that your hair isn't growing fast enough. but i wouldn't really know how it feels, being my hair doesn't grow at all! people these days! there is this select group of people that, i do believe, mention those things just to phase me. but they don't. sorry. i'm not here to have a pity party. i'm here to live my life, thank you very much.
i'd love to be on broadway. i loooooove singing, dancing, and acting so much!! (i know that sounds weird... like every other girl. singing and acting. wow. but they all want to be famous. i just want to sing and dance.) i recently did opera training, and i LOVED IT. yeah, i'm a weirdo. but honestly, i do not believe that i'd get anywhere with opera or broadway as my career, so my options are still open.
i know i may sound fruitcake-ish with all of the above musical interests and loves, but i'm allllll about hardcore music. haha... my favorite band of all-time is the devil wears prada. i've seen them live twice, and every time it's been the best feeling in the world.
what it all comes down to is, i LOVE life. so maybe i get stares at the mall, little kids asking me why i don't have hair, etc. i absolutely love telling people about my disease. it makes people infer that i'm intelligent, and, in my case, that's not a bad thing.
i have a lot of wigs. they're pretty fun.
and for some strange reason, over the past 3 months, i've grown eyelashes. thank goodness!! i've never had eyelashes before and it's AMAZING.

update 9/3/11:
I now have eyelashes, peach fuzz on my head, and have located two strands of hair that are about an inch long protruding from my scalp. I am a little confused.
