- I love archery, playing piano, reading books about things that could never happen to me, and being knee-deep in snow. I'd like to imagine that those kinds of things are more important than how much hair I don't have, but I'm only just starting to be brave enough to find out. I began losing my hair when I was 9 or 10 and it happened in a slow, devastating sort of way over a few years; devastating because I kept rallying hope that it would heal, only to be constantly disappointed.
In the time since then I've learned really well how to hide. It's exhausting. I want to stop caring so much what other people think of the-bald-girl-who-wears-wigs. I guess that's why I'm here: to see how you all do it. To learn to be brave.
Edit to add: I'm a lesbian. I wish I could say that the reason I began shaving my head was to look cool and tough and fit a stereotype, but I'm not those things. I'm geeky. I'm shy. I can't open jam-jars. I'd wear makeup and skirts more often if I felt feminine enough for them, but I rarely do.
