My feeling exactly, Suzanne. There are lots of ways good things can come of having to deal with this disease. A big one for me has been meeting the people on AW and sharing the journey. Here's another I blogged about last…
I just joined the Alopecia Areata Registry as well. Got my paperwork in the mail the other today and spent today filling out the forms. I'm excited that they might be able to learn something about it!
I'm in for fundraising research and wigs for those who can't afford it. Jodi has an organization she is working on called If I only had my hair which sounds like an excellent charity to donate to. You can see it at her site…
Hey Tori .. I saw your blog on advocacy and notice Thea's response. I am working with her to prepare the Bagel Brunch in Manhattan and I think it would be a very cool thing to share with a fellow New Yorker. I feel like bringing awareness to…
It's been 2 years for me, Tori. I feel the same way you do, frustrated by the lack of public awareness and by the assumption that every bald woman has cancer. Last year, I came up with a simple idea I called the "National Bald Out" -…
So it's been 6 years now, and I know that compared to some of the others on this website its just the beginning, but I feel as though I know the monster that i'm dealing with at this point. I think part of the only way to cope with this disadvantage is to help others, and raise awareness. Does anyone know any way I could start getting involved?? I surfed naaf.org, and the only advocacy I came across was telephone help, or becoming involved in the annual conference. I'd like to do more than… Continue
So i've been really eager to get involved with fundraising, and I was thinking of creating my own event. Does anyone have any ideas? I was thinking something along the lines of a Fashion Show... Your input would be greatly appreciated :)
Hey Tori .. I saw your blog on advocacy and notice Thea's response. I am working with her to prepare the Bagel Brunch in Manhattan and I think it would be a very cool thing to share with a fellow New Yorker. I feel like bringing awareness to others only makes the process easier for us. Let me know if you are interested in helping with the planning etc.
Hey Tori, you could certainly get involved in many ways from having a support group for people in their 20s to starting an employment market for people with alopecia, to starting your fashion show. I'm an entrepreneur who was laid off 8 years ago from a major college in NYC. I went online to ask people's advice and talked with someone from England who said they clean pubs. With many conversations she convinced me to start my own cleaning service of which I have now in Manhattan and so glad I did it. Get back to me for possible ideas.
I struggled with AA as a teen as well and now it's frustrating to deal with it in my 20s. Do you wear wigs or are you able to style your hair around it?
Your are still very young and obviously beautiful. Do not allow this too take its toll on you girl. Stay focused on all aspects of life not just the superficial one although I now it can be stressful at times. I remember having a conversation with someone and all the while throughout our conversation I could see her eyes moving up and down- from my eyes to my head, back to my eyes then up to my head- it made me very self-conscious in that moment but then realized that people know no better adn that it is usually just a natural reaction but after about 10 minutes of this I looked her straight in the eye and said WHEN YOU LOOK AT ME MIJA (that's means girl in spanish) TRY TO FOCUS ON ME, I AM ME , I AM NOT MY HAIR. She shrugged, chucked and has not really conversated with me since...... OH WELL!

Hi Tori, I wanted to welcome you to Alopecia World. I can honestly say that we are a great community here and I hope you enjoy the time you spend with us.
Hello and welcome, Tori!
I'm sorry you're struggling. I know how hard alopecia can be; I have had it for about 30 years. Let me know if you need help or support. One thing that you might be interested in is my book, written for women, called "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" (It just won two national awards!) It has a lot of good info in it, it can answer many questions, and it's a fun read, too. You can find out more on my page. It's available on Amazon.com, and on this site under "Bookshelf."
Let me know if there's anything else I can do! I am here to help.
