About Me:
I'm 25 and I work as a drugs counsellor in criminal justice. So I spend all day dealing with other peoples problems as well as my own! I have had alopecia areata since October 2009 and currently have a hair piece. It developed after I went to work in America for 3 months and was very homesick, so the stress of that could have triggered it. Its starting to grow back a bit now, but I know these things take time and can start all over again.

I live with my bf and friends and I like going to the gym, cinema, CSI and Sci-Fi.
Do you have alopecia?

A turning point?

Posted on February 3, 2011 at 1:25pm 0 Comments

I wore my hair down (as in not in a ponytail with tons of hairspray and grips) to the office the other day, and with no hair piece. I had to scrape back the top a bit and grip that back so it offered a bit more cover on the back. I was really worried as it felt so thin on the back, but my colleague (who has seen my hairloss from the worst period) assured me it was fine.

I've also booked in to a normal hair salon to have my haircut before my holiday to Tenerife, rather than going and… Continue

New style

so since I got a new hair piece on NHS (£158, compared with the £400 one I had last year that my parents paid for). The old one was looking a bit outdated so I got a fringe put in it, but the girl at the salon had to cut a small fringe into my own hair to thicken it up and make it look more natural.

I love the look but its making my head so greasy and hot, and im worried the front clip will make my hairline really thin. Its a pain because before i was tying my hair up all the time to… Continue

Update

Well I haven't posted for a while.

Good news:

The patch on the back of my head has grown back pretty well - hair is quite short and thin still but its better than the glaring white patch of head that was there before, easier to hide now.

I went for my fitting at another wig salon through the NHS (so I'm paying £158 instead of the £400 I paid for the first piece) and got all measurements taken etc but it won't be ready until end of October probably (after my… Continue

Look what the postman brought me today

This is my new hair this morning. It's a synthetic top piece, whereas my one before was human hair and cost £400. his one has more shape. I'm a little concerned though as the front layers are really "choppy" and i can't straighten it as its not heat resistant - will they flatter over time? Also my boyfriend commented that it's really shiny - does this also fade?

I need to move one of the clips as at the mo it sits on my big… Continue

Hi Rachel,

Just stumbled across a post where you mentioned Mane Spray. I was wondering how you find this product. I have blonde hair and someone I talked to said to go for the light brown as the blondes aren't so good?

Hey Rachel.... sorry for the huge delay in replying... i don't come on here a lot but i find from time to time when things are getting me down i come on here for a bit of support.
How are you at the moment? Hope your hair is growing back or you've got used to your hairpiece :-) Your hairpiece looks great on your picture.... its always going to be hard trying something new out but its always worth it to start with so that you know what suits you and whats most comfortable to use. I've had a lot of ups and downs but feel like i'm getting there slowly.
If ever need a chat please drop me an email and i'll get back to you asap.

Hope all is ok, Melinda x

Sounds like your hair is progressing. how long did it take for you hair to really start coming in? I started loosing mine in March and most of it is growing in pretty good, but I have a large patch along my neckline that is driving me crazy.

Hi Rachel, you have quite an involved job. Your wig looks sensational. England is kind of my adopted country. I was laid off of my job some 8 yrs. ago and went online asking chatters of what job could I possibly do. Someone from Yorkshire, England mentioned that they clean pubs. With a few suggestions and not too much thought I started my own cleaning service here in NYC in the United States and have had it for 8 yrs. now. I developed alopecia over 30 yrs. ago and just 4 mos. ago went on this site after going to a support group. I was really glad I did. Also started my own group for Alopecians. Welcome to Alopecia World!
