About Me:
My hair began to thin gradually (adolescent androgenic alopecia) starting at age 11. Over time, my hair became so thin in middle school and in high school and for the majority of my young adulthood, I tried to wear a wig to cover up my hair loss. I would become very embarrassed if anyone notice that I had a wig on. Around a year and a half ago, I began to look into alternatives for wearing wigs because I started to get headaches from the elastic bands on the wigs and I always felt too hot and sweaty, like wearing a knit hat, in the summer time. Now, I wrap my head in scarves. People seem to think it looks nice and I really don't think too much about it as it has become second nature. I've also become a lot more comfortable in my own skin in being who I am. I am up front with people about my alopecia. Occasionally, there are still awkward and uncomfortable encounters with strangers who assume that I have cancer and inquire about how my "treatment" is going. If there were a treatment to fix my hair loss I would hope it would go well but there is nothing that I have yet found to cure my condition. So, I'm going to keep on doing what I do and there are days that I feel frustrated and sad but I don't wallow in my sadness. I choose to make things work and to live my life and not allow my hair loss to hold me back.
