What products do you use?

There may be a thread already started on this, but I thought I'd ask anyway. We've had Mikayla's FW for just two months now, and of course the hair is still wonderful, but I want to make sure we make this last as long as we can make it last! :o) Currently we are using the Caviar line from Alterna, plus we use an Argan Oil serum. Also, recently I ordered the WEN conditioning shampoo and WEN re-moist moisture mask, but I haven't tried those yet. I know the key to keeping this hair in the best…See More

My Daughter...

Posted on November 11, 2009 at 3:46pm 2 Comments

My daughter, Mikayla, has what started out as Alopecia Areata, but looks as if it is progressing towards Totallis. She is dealing with it very well...much stronger than I probably would. She is in the 7th grade this year, and this is her first year of public school, and a fairly large one at that. She's always been at a smaller private school. She is involved in the band, and LOVES school. She is currently wearing a synthetic wig, because she is not comfortable enough to go "natural", and we… Continue

Hi Matt,
Thank you for your encouragement. Stephanie shaved her head at her 14th birthday party with 30 friends around her. Everyone was so supportive. Now she is losing her eyelashes and eyebrows. She only wore a wig to her choir concert, otherwise she wears a hat or goes bald. How are you guys? How is Mikayla?

So brave and insightful to tell those girls what she did. To me it sounds like you taught her the ver useful lesson on knowing that she deservs better than being treated badly by anyone. And even though I dont have the kind of faith in God that you and your daughter do, but I hear what you re telling me, and I agree. Alopecia will form who they will become, and that is not neccessary in a bad way. I think they are learning a (hard) lesson on being full of mercy and understanding towards other people and the sorrows and hardsship that they may be living with.
I see that she has 3 syblings. Which one is she in the pic, and which one in the order of age? My Klara has three little sisters. One 2 years younger who is one of her best friends. And then there are a couple of twin-girls that are 5 years younger than Klara. They are a happy gang that get very well along, only hope it will continue. Its Klara who set the tone. She s the nicest bigsister anyone could ask for, she always put her sisters first and are trying to be nice. A little bit to good for her own good, so as a parent we have to work on her not taking to much responsability and think a little bit more about herself.
Klara goes to a smaller school at the moment. But at the age of 12-13 she ll go to a different one, and get new classmates. Our village is small, and I suppose by then everybody at the post office to the library will be used to her bald head. and I hope there wont be any bad nick-names....I the best of worlds she can go on to the new school with or without a wig, feeling confortable. On the other hand, I guess I shouldnt try to predict the future. Some thinks are better of to take day by day.

Hi there!
Came across your discussion regarding wigs. Wigs in Europe dont go under the same names I guess, so I cant help you on that. But I was struck by you writing in your blog post that on you re learning lots about personal strength from your 12-year old. There is confort for me reading that this is so often the case, that the kids deal with it better than us parents.
My daughter is younger than yours, she s 8, and while the hair was coming off rapidly at the end it was tough on her too, but now I find she came to some balance and acceptence of being hairless. Her social life seams uneffected, and when meeting new people she doesnt seem to see how people look at her, the way I do. And as far as missing her hair, she was kind of cured of that when she got her wig..it seems.
But I am worried about the future, because I suppose her experiences from Alopecia , andher feelings regarding it, will change over time. Not the least I worry about the teens an pre-teens. So I am relieved to hear from you that even a 12-year old can stay strong through this somehow..or at least at some point.
She got a human hair wig customed for children, a lace wig I think they call it in English. There are some pics in my albume. However she hasnt worn it much, lately not at all. She got used to not having hair hanging down in her food and books, and it simply get s in her face! And mainly I m happy that she feels confortable this way, and proud of her strengh! When she gets older she might change her mind, and then it s there for her.
How does the wig (the old or the new one) work for your daughter. She use it at gym class etc? Doesnt it get warm? Does her friends now about her condition? The rest of the school?
Take care!
