Hi Lori, Im also a firm believer that iron levels and increasing our natural immune system will help out with hair growth( easier said then done tho).I also take very large amount of vitamins and suppliments to increase levels. Talk to your derm about a regimen of either corticosteroid injections to the scalp or a contact sensitizer PLUS 2% minoxidil (Rogaine). The newer form of Rogaine as a foam is easier to keep in the area intended and the 2% is the strength recommended for women to avoid unwanted growth of facial hair. It takes 12 consistent weeks to see if this regimen has worked.

This protocol is not effective for advanced AT or AU, but it is useful in up to 48% of the people who use it for patch alopecia. Summary: the Rogaine lengthens the anagen (growing) growth phase of the hairs you have while the steroid or contact sensitizer reduces the cellular inflammation of follicles getting ready to shoot up the hair fiber through the scalp.
If I had patchy alopecia I'd be trying this protocol.
