SOOOOOO embarassing

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 10:33am 12 Comments

Last night I had a new neighbor over for dinner. We are both single and I thought it would be nice to get together. I have had AU for two years now, but I ALWAYS wear a wig. Dinner went well, and when he left, he gave me a hug and my wig caught on his sleeve and fell off.....I picked it up off the ground and put it back on, and made some joke about how I can go from bald to beautiful in 2 seconds flat...and quickly explained I had no hair due to AU.... I am still so embarassed....(I know it… Continue

Reasons for Alopecia

Posted on August 13, 2009 at 7:17am 7 Comments

Hello everyone,

I have had alopecia universalis for only six months.. I shaved my head five months ago. I have no hair anywhere on my body... Doctors around here are somewhat clueless.. they have never seen anything like this. They say it is caused by stress. Is this what the rest of you are told too? Yes, I have stress in my life, but who doesn't??? I don't feel that my stress is that high to cause such a dramatic outcome. From what I understand, there is really no cause or cure for this.… Continue

Hallo Linda
I think , alopecia is caused by
a genetic component and stress .
A lot of people have stress, but not everybody get alopecia, who has a stress.
A lot of people, who has alopecia , hade not a stress before( for example some small children here, who has good parents).
Stress is one of the reasons for alopecia.

Well, I can't give much insight on how to deal with dating anxiety, because I struggle with that myself. What I can give however, is feedback that I think you are being too concerned about it. You are very attractive, which I'm sure many guys will see. You may have to work a little harder to find those guys, but I'm sure they're out there for you.

Hey Linda!

Thanks for the friend request. Reading your page, it sounds like you do a pretty good job keeping a good attitude about AU. I know it can be tough. I've been bald for about 10 years now, so it is not big deal for me anymore, but the first year had challenges. Whenever I got down, I would remind myself of all the far worse conditions I could have.

Hope you're having a good week.

Thanks for the add! The woman I'm seeing for eyebrow tattooing is a "Nationally Certified Master Artist." I'm very excited! I had an easier time coping with hair loss than the eyebrows. I can't get used to waking up in the morning bald with no eyebrows, so I'm looking forward to having eyebrows again. In the meantime, I'm penciling them in with my "Kelly Ripa" stencil :)

Don't know where the wig discussion started, but here's a take on it:

New Hampshire statue pays up to $350 a year but you have to meet your deductible and there will be co-pays. So without the details you don't know if your plan is reimbursing you for example up to a yearly max of $350 out of pocket or if the value of the payment will be up to $350 based on some reimbursement formula such as a credit to you of 80% of the "approved" cost.....blah blah blah.... Well the point is that $350 is not $350 unless you get the exact particulars from your insurer.

What the state is saying in this statute is that a hair prostheses must be given the same reimbursement as other prosthetics. The devil is in the details and a statute by its nature is not going to define what those are for any individual person's policy.

It doesn't matter as a practical matter, what the state says is required for prosthetics equality. It still boils down to your policy, your out of pocket and the reimbursement formula your policy uses. The insurer is required to try to treat your prosthesis equal to others, but it's not a straight line from A to B.

You might very well decide that filing a claim for a cheap wig is not well spent. And again..it's all in the interpretation of the coverage details as to what kind of wig vendor is considered qualified to provide a medically necessitated hair prosthesis. This is not likely to be your average wig store and probably not your online store. The paperwork has to be correct and the vendor has to be considered authorized by the terms of your coverage.

As a parallel: I'm licensed in a medical professional field in 3 states. There are situations where the service I provide is covered by Medicare or private insurance because I'm state board certified. Another technician, without a professional training and license might overlap with some of my skills, but they don't hold the same state license and their services will never be reimbursable.

The same is true of hair replacement vendors. Most people just get the wig they want from whomever they want. But if you really wanted to know in advance if that vendor would be considered as authorized by your insurance it would take a lot of time and phone calls to sort it out ahead of time..and most people would rather just roll the dice instead.

Remember, the point of insurance premiums is to insure against an unlikely-to-happen event that could have catastrophic consequences like a fire or a very major illness. Insurance was not created for the purpose of a common event of relatively insignificant consequence. If you want to insure against that you can but the premiums will be sky high.
