Kevin,
You are a sweetheart and I'm sending you a big hug and head rub! My son is 18 and felt like you are feeling. He has come to terms with his AU as much as he can, but he has his bad days. He's a freshman and got alopecia at 17. A popular smart guy going in his senior yr with everything to look forward to and it was his worst year. He started with a hair piece until within 4 mos. it all came out. So he shaved his head and wore a wig. He was ashamed and embarrased and swore us to secrecy. It was a bad time. He did have a girlfriend who was the only one that knew but he would never let her see him without his wig on. So the year went by and after graduation he little by little told his good friends who were totally supportive, like your situation his best friend shaved his head and my son was still wearing his wig until orientation for college. He figured that was the best time to go without it. Fresh start, nobody knows him. It's been good. He loves college, has made good friends. I'll tell you what I told him. Yeah, it sucks. This is a cross you and he have to bare. I understand your situation was worse than my son's because you started at a very young age, when kids are cruel and ignorant. Even now, you will come into contact with people who aren't accepting of this and you know what? Thats okay. Let them go. You don't want people like that as friends. They are shallow and have no substance. You are wise because of this condition. Use that knowledge to realize the important things in life. Be yourself. If you can just accept this (what choice do you have) then others will too. My son started working out every day all summer and looks great. He said he wants to control the things he can. He was always a confident guy and this has knocked him down a few pegs, but he's really dealing with it. You can too. Get on with the business of living your life and associate with good people. You can vent anytime. :)
Mary
p.s. He and his girlfriend of 2 years ended up breaking up.
