Tomorrow?

Posted on October 8, 2013 at 10:03pm 2 Comments

Every now and again, I'll feel like purging. I find some curious soul and satisfy their curiosity by divulging my deepest alopecia secret. Been completely bald for 3 quarters of my life. Lost all my hair smack dead at the start of puberty, in that same rude and dusruptive way that alopecia tends to do. They stare into my eyes in awe waiting for my tear glands to fill up - but I'll never give them the satisfaction. Next they may say something completely thoughtless and unfeeling like "you're… Continue

Alopecia trivia

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 10:00am 5 Comments

Society has an interesting way of trivializing alopecia; passing it off as simply cosmetic.

So then I suppose that those of us who dare to feel saddened by this uncontrollable condition which leaves us looking almost supernatural and unspeakably unhealthy should also feel guilty for having such petty, vein, and juvenile emotions....damn. that's a lot.

Random ridiculous thought

'Seems it might be easier to tell the world that I've lost my hair battling cancer than it is to say that I have some immune disorder that attacks hair follicles deeming me bald indefinitely. #justsayin'

Some sorta/kinda acceptance

Posted on November 9, 2011 at 10:30am 4 Comments

So I have finally accepted (after 25 years) that I am a slave to my wig. I started sleeping in my wig two months ago. I take it off only to wash it and to scrub my scalp once a week. Actually ....now that I'm not running for my wig whenever the door rings, or hiding beneath windows in fear that the neighbors will see how horrific I really am, life has gotten better. Believe it or not, my husband Of 8 years even responds to me better. Go figure.

What embarrasses me most...

Posted on May 24, 2009 at 3:30pm 9 Comments

What embarrasses me most is not that I am as bald as an eagle, but the way that I've handled it over the years.

I mean...it is JUST hair...whenever I fail to make a big deal of it, the rest of the world follows suit.

I met a girl once who is stark bald, and never - ever wears a wig. She is probably the most beautiful and fashionable girl I've ever known, and her make-up is always picture perfect. When someone asks her why she doesn't have any hair she just smiles and… Continue

Thanks, Jackie! Yes...ditto what Linda wrote. The Sisterhood group is amazing and is just as she describes it.

National Bald Out events are being organized all over the country - and abroad. I don't know what's happening in your neck of the woods. If nothing's organized where you are, I encourage you to start a discussion in the NBO Group inviting women in your area.
