Well I haven't been around in a while and lots has happened. Crystal, my 16 yr old, informed us 4 months ago that we are going to be grandparents. Truly scary and upsetting, but I still love her dearly. Her AA has not gotten any better although…

Good for you for sticking by her and being willing to be her support. A lot of parents don't do that, they made a mistake and I am sure that she has already realized it, however, she and the baby are going to need all the support they can get…

That's exactly the right thing to do Heather...hold her and tell her everything will work out. My husband and I went through that with our son and his girlfriend. They had promised they were on birth control, but even that doesn't always…

As you may know, my daughter has AA and she has had it for most of her life. She deals with it very well and has had many boyfriends come and go. She has just turned 16 and dropped a bomb on her father and I; she is pregnant. I was extremely upset at first and then angry, but now I have come to except the fact that our lives are going to take a major turn. She understands that she must continue her education, because without it in todays day and age, you cannot et a good job. She also…See More

Teen Magazine

My daughter subscribes to a teen magazine for girls called Justine. I was so pleased to see a special section for a young lady who has Alopecia Areata. She also has a music video on YouTube, "I Could Be Great" that tells a story of a young girl teased and bullied at school. Her goal is to educate others about Alopecia. What an inspiration! Oh by the way her name is Olivia Rusk.

Teenagers are Crazy

My wonderful teenage daughter is at it again. As we look for new a different style wigs to get, especially with the fall weather approaching, she has her sights set on a jet black long haired wig with red streaks in it. Just when I thought she has outgrown the 'goth' look she throughs me a curve ball. All but one of her wigs is some shade of blonde; the one that is not is hot pink with black roots. I guess I can't say much about the pink since at that time my own hair was pink. She just doen't… Continue

Big Step

I am so proud of my daughter that I cannot even begin to express the joy. She has a serious boyfriend and has been afraid to tell him about her Alopecia. Today she told him that she suffers from it and that she wears wigs because of the many bald spots that she has and he was like "oh that's all? I thought it was something serious." She was so afraid that he would not accept her after finding out but was truly surprised that he likes her for her.

Hi Heather!! I'm sorry to learn that your daughter has suffered from AA since age four. I hope you are able to find a new dermatologist and that the treatment helps your daughter slip right into remission. I wonder if there is a National Dermatology Association that you could contact for a referral? Maybe you could even contact the State Board of Dermatology in your new state. I wish you & your sweet daugther the best!!

Hi Heather. Yes, it does seem to be that way, doesn't it? That's alopecia for you, you never know what to expect. Melissa is terrified of needles! We tried to do the shots, but he never even got the 1st shot in. It's not worth the trauma for her, IMO. But I'm glad it works for your daughter.
We have done cortisone cream and Rogaine in the past. This time around, just sporadic use of Rogaine..

Ttyl!

Your daughter is really an inspiration! I read in a different post, that your daughter treats with the shots. How long has she been treating with the shots? Did she begin with just one spot, or more when she began the shots? Has she had AA before, then gone in to remission before this episode of AA ~ or is it a chronic AA condition? Both of my kids are treating with the shots, and both have gained new spots of AA while treating. If you have a minute to share, that would be great. In the meantime, take care of that pretty girl of yours!!

I know. It's probably just as hard for you as it is for her.
You might want to take a look at my book. When I was spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, many women wanted my advice, and I decided to write a book so I could help as many women and girls as possible. It's called, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" It has a lot of stories about women and girls, and it's fun to read. Check it out on my page.
Hugs!

Hi Heather,
How is your daughter doing with her alopecia? Sometimes it's really hard, when girls get to be teens.
Just wanted to see how you are doing today.
