About Me:
Hi everyone! :) My name is Heather, and I am 17, however I have had Alopecia since I was 11. I'm sure I've gone through all the different stages of Alopecia - bald spots, covering everything with bandanas, prednosone drug, cordozone injections... Now my hair is completely gone, and I have been bald like this for years now.
I wear an incredible wig made of human hair. I love my wig to bits, and actually just refer to it as hair usually, and not a wig, because that's what it is like for me!
As for coping and accepting, well, I feel like I accept it. It's one of those things that is just a part of who I am now, and I feel like I am the person I am today because of my Alopecia. I feel like acceptance is totally up to you, and if you have a positive attitude about the whole thing, then it isn't so bad. Obviously, I'd love to have hair, but I don't spend hours and hours wishing for it. Clearly, I'm stuck like this, and there's no point dwelling on it. Instead, I feel like using that energy to be positive about it all really helps. It sounds corny, I know, but it's really how I feel.
A while back, my sister's grade 6/5 class read a book called 'Because of Anya', which is about a girl who's growing up with Alopecia and the different events that happen. Once they finished the book, I got the chance to go into the class and talk about Alopecia and answer questions. While it was great for the kids, I feel like it was even more rewarding for me. Talking about it and raising awareness almost makes it seem easier. Especially since all these little 11 and 12-year-olds thought it was cool that I was bald, rather than weird! Sometimes, Alopecia is harder for those who don't have it, I find. While I've had time to accept and understand it as best I can, they're still confused and don't really get it. In a way, I have to help them with it in order to help myself, if that makes any sense at all! Anyway, I'm so glad to have found this site. It's so great to talk with people who understand!
Do you have alopecia?
Alopecia universalis
Are you age 18 or older?
No - I am not 18 or older

Optimism counts :)

Back in May, I had an incredible experience. I was selected as a representative of my school to apply to the Minerva Learn to Lead conference for 24 girls from around BC. I applied, and got it!

At the conference, we engaged in numerous leadership activities, but on the first night we were made to say one thing that had shaped us in the past ten years. We went around my table, and I honestly completely forgot about Alopecia. I came up with some other random thing I'd done, and didn't even… Continue

My experience with Paul Byrom

Hi everyone! ....so this is my first blog, so I apologise if it's a little off!

So, I just wanted to share my little experience... I don't know if anyone else knows the group Celtic Thunder, but I'm really obsessed with them! They're a group of five solo singers from Ireland and Scotland. I promise all of you, I'm going to marry the 16 year old, Damian McGinty. He hugged me twice! ...But that's off topic.. Anyway, there's a guy in the group named… Continue

I love your quote. "There are only so many perfect heads in the world. The rest are covered with hair :)"

Keeps me optimistic... with or without hair.

Hi Heather

I just wanted to pop in and say what an insightful young woman you are. I have just read your reply on 'alopecia and teenage boys'. It really is so lovely to see such kindness and knowledge. Good on you.

Hi
I just returned to Vancouver after living in Australia and want to know if you belong to an Alopecia support group in the Lower Mainland. If so which one and if not are you interested in joining one?
