- i am 27 year old single mummy, i have had alopecia since just before my 17 birthday. i have really struggled with peoples closed mindedness and have lost many friends due to these peoples opinions. however this has never stopped me being me. i love my real friends they will always be with me, i would love the chance to find my someone special...if ya out there im waiting lol.

I'm sure you'll find that special person...It's not easy being a young mom and a single one and all the rest and still have time for a lively social life. But it will happen.
I understand the challenges of comments from other people. There are not that many people with alopecia totalis and on top of that, they're hard to spot in public.
I do think that as women especially like yourself take on the role of explaining it, event though it seems like a burden at times, it does get easier. The more nonchalant we are the more nonchalant other people are. Fortunately the cancer connection is now a part of our cultures so that people can talk about that openly. Not that long ago, the word cancer was not spoke in in public, spoken to the patient and never in print or in media. So we have the benefit that the public is free to discuss it now and they do make the association of baldness readily. I imagine if I did not have alopecia universalis myself, I might likely make the same associations, too.

Rebecca Benjafield said… - Still in two minds about it ? As have hair on top and back but none on the sides of my head so wear wigs or a cap to ' fit ' in but like you feel fake and bloody uncomfortable.
Going on holiday in June so don't know wether to do it before go so I can relax in the pool and when zooming down water slides with my liitle boy !
