About Me:
I'm trying to think of what to say about me. I'm not accustomed to talking about myself, so here goes:

I was diagnosed with cicatricial alopecia/lichen planopilaris in June of this year. I was prescribed Olux-E foam for the itching/pain which I am happy with at the moment. I was also prescribed Rogaine 5% which I am NOT happy with since the strong smell set off my asthma/allergies and it grew hair just about everywhere BUT my scalp. It cost me $75 to get my face waxed!! Bwahahahaaaa! I can laugh about it now, but maaaaannnnnnn three weeks ago I was highly annoyed.
Now, I'm just strategizing when to get out the headblade. My derm doesn't think I should do it since I still have plenty of thick hair on the back and sides, for the moment She actually suggested a perm. Yes, ya'll read it right, a PERM. I couldn't believe it either.
To me putting lye on my head so I can pull off a comb-over is out of the question, and I'm getting annoyed of hair being everywhere in the house.
So, the next logical** step for me is to get rid of it.

**I know, what's logic got to do with it, right? ;)

UPDATE: Got tired of the spots and shaved on 2/25/2011.

Wig Watch 2011

Posted on February 19, 2011 at 2:25pm 9 Comments

So after a lengthy delay, I got my hair buzzed last night. The non-bald portions had gotten way too long, so my fro was full of "dents". {Yes, it was kind of hilarious to see.} I asked her to take it as low as possible fully aware that I had the bald spots. I assured her it was okay. She really didn't want to do it until I told her I had a wig on standby. I also told her that I'm eventually going to shave it all anyway because the bald part isn't growing back. She asked why ... I told her… Continue

Well as long as we're venting, let's discuss my shins!

What the hell do my shins have to do with my scalp?

WITHOUT FAIL, when my shins start itching, my scalp starts within the next day.

How could shins and scalp possibly be connected?

Who thought up this madness?

And what, praytell, do I do with a bottle of Desonide (that's still at least half full) that no longer works on the itchy shins? That doggone prescription cost US$62!!

Enquiring minds want to know,… Continue

Why are you staring? You've never seen a pink elephant before?

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 12:21am 13 Comments

Okay, on Laura's discussion "Is it time to shave?", Mary said this:

"I finally realized that I had a choice between suffering physically (being miserable and hot) or suffering emotionally/mentally (people staring, not able to be anonymous)."

I immediately keyed in on "suffering emotionally/mentally (people staring, not able to be anonymous)" because I was having this EXACT argument with myself last week. (Yes, I do argue with myself. I've been told that as… Continue

Conventional beauty standards be damned!

Sometimes I feel like shaving my head just out of spite!

Yeah, I have cicatricial alopecia that has left some interesting "spaces" in my TWA, so I guess I have a good enough "reason" to shave, but I don't really need to yet.

What really gets me going is the experiences that ladies here are sharing. What gives anyone the right to denigrate a person for something they have ABSOLUTELY no control over? The hurt that has been experienced over this is maddening to… Continue

Hi again Angie. I know what you mean about being ready. This whole journey came about because I was ready to change my hairstyle. I have been wearing dreads since 2001 and I have wanted a change, but once I was diagnosed with CCCA I realized my options were limited. It's hard--I think dreadlocks are beautiful, and they very much suit me, but sadly mine are no longer beautiful, or at least not up to their former glory. I have known this for some time. I have never wanted to be someone who was trying to hold onto my hair, which is why I have decided to cut them despite the fact that I could still probably cover my bald spots for another year or so. I haven't had straight hair since I was in junior high! That will be the biggest change of all, but I will see how wearing a wig goes before I experiment with being bald. Thank you again for listening and blazing a trail. :)

Angie: I love your pictures. Your hair before you shaved is pretty much exactly what mine looks like now, and I too have been relegated to wearing my dreads in a ponytail for years. I am cutting them next week! I feel a mixture of anger, sadness, fear, and excitement. Thank you for being here and sharing yourself with those of us with CCCA who are new to this journey.

The Ange! 'Tis yourself!
Yeah, I'm fine, thanks - not been on here that much meself. Life is still unintentionally hilarious... a friend gave me some extra RAM for my computer a short while back, and as I was leaving, I said (without thinking) "Thanks for the memory".... *sigh* Sometimes I terrify myself.

How's you, anyway? Still the cynical, bitter, twisted old hag you always were? ... which is why I like you so much? :) xxx

Thank you for the feedback Angie. I researched photographers and in my area it was slim pickin's. Kyle Ober was a perfect match for me. He captured me. I told him all about my recently losing my hair. He knew just what to do.

Thanks for the welcome to this site. It's actually a welcome back for me. I stepped away from this site and most things Alopecia about a year ago. I had to grieve the loss and regroup. I hope to inspire those who want to be inspired. And maybe in turn gain a little more altitude and a better attitude as I live life against the grain.
