How do I help my child who is being bullied at school because of her alopecia?

Just last year my daughter, who is in elementary school, lost all of her hair. She's had alopecia areata for a few years but we always managed to cover her bald spots. All of a sudden all of her hair was coming out. It turned into alopecia universalis. At first she wore hats to school, then we got her a wig. Kids immediately made fun of her for not having hair and then for wearing the wig. When school got out for the summer she was so relieved. She had a great low stress summer but just…

Hi! My name is Mikayla! I went through the same thing when I was in elementary school. I was in the sixth grade when my hair began to fall out. By 7th grade I progressed to totalis and received my first wig. I can from a private school where I only had ten kids in my class only three of them came to the same school as me (and none of them were my friend) to school where there were around 700 kids my age. One of the kids from my old school ended up telling another student that I wore a wig. Everything got worse and worse as it carried on from there. Kids began to make rude comments and some even attempted to pull my hair off. All they did was snicker and laugh around me and I felt there was nothing that I could do. One day I was so upset that I told my parents what was going on and told them I never wanted to go back to school. That night my parents called the principal and explained what was going on. The next day students were continuously being called out of class and by the next day most of the trouble makers were caught. I know your daughter probably wouldn't feel comfortable talking to the students personally, but it really does help. The principal can even do the talking if she doesn't feel comfortable, in fact she doesn't even have to be present. The main point I want to make is with kids most the time when they bully about things like that they are really just curious and they just aren't sure how to approach the situation. In my case all the kids thought that I wore a wig because I thought they were cool and some of them thought that I had shaved my hair or pulled it out. No, bullying is not the correct way to deal with the situation, but sometimes that is the only way in which children know how to cope with their curiosity. I remember after I told the kids why I really wore a wig there was not one dry eye in that room. They didn't know or even consider that is was a medical condition. I told them I had Alopecia which was a condition that didn't allow me to grow hair. I told them I did not choose for this to happen to me, it was not contagious, and that I did not appreciate what they had done. I told them I prayed every day that no one else has to deal with what I deal with. I also let them know that what they did was not okay, but that I forgave them. In the end we actually ended up being pretty good friends and if anyone else tried to say anything to me about my hair they were my guardians.

I now have Alopecia Universalis and have had that since the 9th grade. So I know some of what she is dealing with on that hand as well....

I know that this story was really long, but I hope that it helps. I also have to say that I am really sorry that this is happening to your daughter. I will pray for her and pray that everything turns out okay.
