I don't think this is a traditional talent: I do leather bookbinding. I learned from the bookbinders at Colonial Williamsburg and from various articles in "The Bonefolder" journal. It's a fantastic thing...conceiving a design, sewing paper, embossing leather, gluing boards. It is really a high for me! Bookbinding is an intimate relationship with the words of an author; it is giving physical form to abstract ideas. I have bound facsimiles of medieval manuscripts, works of Homer (in Greek), and books of poetry. I've created an album for a rare stamp collection, custom logs for ocean voyages (mine!), and personalized journals.

Hi Marie...do you make altered books also?
No, I've never tried that. But, I have seen some very cool things done with altered books. For me, though, I like to take the book through the whole process of putting the author's words into physical form. It's about the artistry and craftsmanship, of course, but its also about creating an actual BOOK, one that can be read, shelved, pondered, re-read, referenced, etc. Thanks for asking. Do you make altered books?
Not yet.
